THE MONTY ROBERTS EDITORIAL SECTION - News |

Everybody and anybody can be a 'horse whisperer'. The language Equus is predictable, discernable, and effective. It can be taught to anyone – as long as they are open to listening and learning. |

The Monty Roberts Special Clinic 2009 |
We have just been privileged to attend the week-long 2009 Special Clinic with Monty Roberts! It was fantastic - five full days with Monty himself - and an incredible learning experience. Eduardo Moreira from Brazil has created a short video to describe the clinic and here is the link:

There will be a full DVD available shortly from the Monty Roberts International Learning Centre and we will be publishing articles and pictures about the clinic, here, shortly. This year, Equinetourism.co.uk will be developing the Monty Roberts editorial section to help communicate the work of this amazing horseman, who has changed the lives of thousands of horses (and owners) for the better, across the globe.

The 2009 Special 5-Day Clinic with Monty Roberts in California
The Monty Roberts International Learning Centre at Flag is Up Farms in California is ably run by a highly trained team of instructors, however, Monty Roberts himself spends a large part of his year away from home, touring the world to promote his horsemanship methods and help people and horses face to face. This means that there are currently very few opportunities for Monty to give in-depth clinics at home on his ranch. So few, in fact, that he held only one Special 5-day clinic this year, which we have just been privileged to attend.
While we knew that Monty Roberts was going to be teaching us himself, we didn't realise this would be an incredible, full-on 9am-5.30pm -including lunchtimes - for the five-day stretch. Forty students from around the world gathered at Flag Is Up for the most amazing, in-depth Masterclass and learning experience - and each and every one of us left the course a better, more enlightened horseman.
Each morning started at 9am sharp with Monty bang on time and keen to get started. There would be a question and answer session from the day before, then a fascinating talk by Monty on his philosophies and methodology. It's worth saying that every single student remained rivetted all day every day, until the last minute of the evening, and if the sessions over-ran past 6pm - no one was complaining. Monty is so knowledgable and charismatic that it was impossible to be bored for even one second and we all set about learning as much as we possibly could. He and his wife Pat provided lunch for us all at his home every day and, while we were relaxing, he took more questions and answers so no time was wasted.
Flag Is Up Farms is an eclectic mix of horse interests, on many levels. There is a racehorse breeding and training programme; a quarantine centre; a Willing Partners programme where horses are trained up as perfect riding partners; a rehabilitation programme for abused horses; a socialising programme for wild mustangs; and the International Learning Centre itself which binds all of this together with teaching Monty Roberts methods to students from around the globe. The ranch is open to visitors most days and runs many programmes from corporate development and leadership training, to the full range of horsemanship courses from Join-Up starter clinics to the Intro Course, Advanced Course and the Instructors Internment. Currently, there are 26 instructors around the world.

Re-habilitating a badly treated Appaloosa mare who refuses to accept a rider or tack |

This Appaloosa mare had recently been bought by a woman who shortly afterwards discovered that she had serious spooking and bucking issues and would not accept a rider at all. Through closer investigation, she discovered that the mare had been rejected by various trainers who said that she should be destroyed. So the visit to Flag is Up was her last chance. The owner had been told that the white hairs running down the mare's girthline were 'normal Appaloosa markings'. However, on closer investigation, it was clear that these were white hairs produced as a result of previous sores created by a badly fitting girth. To create such sores, the mare must have been forced to wear the tight girth even when the skin was lacerated and raw - can you imaging the pain and distress that this would cause? She also had scarring up from the sides of her mouth and in other areas of the body. The mare was explosive and would lash out furiously with her legs, and buck when asked to wear tack.
Work started with the mare with some Dually halter work, followed by de-sensitising work with plastic bags attached to a stick. At first, the bags were tightly tied into a small ball, and used to stroke and touch the mare all over her body. As she became more accepting, the bags were loosened so they flapped. Soon, the mare was standing with a loose line to the ground, unrestrained and allowing Monty to tough her with the bags over her body. After this, she did an excellent Join-UP and progress was definitely made as she showed calmer, more accepting behaviour. We saw sessions during the week and this mare made outstanding progress and began to trust that her tack, and handlers, would not hurt her. |
