2007 Exmoor Pony Society Breed Show Report
This year's Exmoor Pony Society Breed Show, at Exford, saw record entries for both ridden and in hand classes and all judges commented on the superb quality of the Exmoor ponies exhibited. The Breed Show is especially important for this rare and endangered breed, which despite careful management of the gene pool and bloodlines, still numbers only about 2,500 worldwide, with only around 300 moorland breeding stock. Strong, intelligent and of superb conformation and quality, Exmoors make quality performance ponies in many disciplines and are rapidly becoming more popular with adults and children alike. The 2007 show hosted the NPS/Baileys Horse Feeds Mountain & Moorland Supreme Ridden Olympia Qualifier and nineteen ponies were entered for the class, with the coverted ticket and NPS Silver Medal going to Miss Rebecca Jarvis (from the North) , riding the eight year old Anchor herd stallion, Pernod (owned by Mrs Judy Smith). The ridden judge, Mrs June Little, thoroughly enjoyed the class. "It was an excellent class - any one of the top three ponies could have won it and in the end, it came down to personal preference. It was a great pleasure to judge the class - ridden Exmoors have improved enormously and they are much better produced now, with both adults and children riding better. It was a tremendous thrill for the winner as I gather she has been trying to qualify for Olympia for some years." The Novice Ridden class was won by Stephanie Poulter's stallion, Flying Buttress, from Monmouth.
Top honours in the In Hand classes went to Ruth & Dai Thomas' four year old mare, Coedywern Harebell, who stood Supreme Champion, Senior Champion and Up Country Champion and won the NPS Silver Medal. In Hand judge, Debbie Davey, who had travelled from Scotland, said, "It was an honour to judge this year. The top end of my classes were wonderful and some of the decisions were very hard. The standard of the mares and youngstock in particular was very high and it is so encouraging to see that these beautiful youngsters are growing up to be our breeding population. All the of the champions and reserves were superb and excellent examples of the breed. My supreme champion, Coedywern Harebell, is a quality type, with bone and lovely clean legs, well marked and correct. She moves beautifully and she was blooming - had a real sparkle - and carried it all day long." The Thomas', from Wales, also had cause for celebration when their stallion, Coedywern Fagus, won the senior stallion class and two Coedywern youngsters, Coedywern Juniper (owned by Mr & Mrs Whittle from Somerset ) and Coedywern Jonquil (owned by Jackie Ablett & Gill Langdon from Exmoor ) and bred by the Thomas', took 1st and 2nd place in the 2 year old colts and fillies class, making it a bumper day for the Coedywern ponies (Herd 49).
The Youngstock championship went to 3 year old colt, Dunkery Nuthatch, owned by Julian and April Westcott from Exmoor. Last year's supreme champion, the 3 year old colt, Hawkwell Versuvius, owned by Dawn Williams (also from Exmoor), stood Moor Bred Champion and Res Youngstock Champion. Exmoor-based Mrs Wendy Vint's filly foal Dunkery Twite won the Foal class with her mare Dunkery Pratincole standing Res Senior Champion. The Stallion & Mare Produce group was won by Mr Paul Schmidt's Liqueur group (from Sussex), with Mrs Glasper's Sweetcombe Group (from Devon) taking the Breeder's Group.
Geldings exhibited were also of a very high standard with the 8 year old Gelding Champion, Waltersgay Kingfisher, owned by Misses Williams & Nash from Western-super-Mare), eventually taking Reserve Supreme Champion of the show. Another of their geldings, Knightoncombe Goldfinch, stood Reserve Gelding Champion. Gelding and in hand championship judge, Mrs Yvonne Campbell, from Somerset, said, "I had a good strong class of 4yrs and over geldings this year, and some very promising youngsters. My champion, Waltersgay Kingfisher, is a very good example of the breed and rightly went on to take Res Supreme of the show."

Show Report: It was touch and go whether the 101st National Pony Society Championships Show would go ahead at all last week at the Three Counties Showground, due to the catastrophic flooding in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and South Worcestershire. "We were monitoring the situation almost hourly in the days before the show," said Show Chairman Jackie Webb. "Members of Council had assessed alternative venues during the previous week but none had been able to provide, at short notice, the superb facilities offered by the Three Counties." The route, via Upton-upon-Severn, was still closed just a few days before the show but cleared shortly beforehand and there were no hold ups for competitors travelling to Malvern."I hope that we brought back a bit of hope to the area by supporting it at this time." said Jackie.
Native ponies were all well represented at the show and it was especially good to see a number of Exmoor ponies being well placed in all the major championships. Lucy Larkman and Elsinore Simon Sparrow won the Exmoor ridden class and featured in the Templeton/O'Neill final line up along with Kathryn Lloyd and Blackthorn Sea Poacher. Rebecca Swift and Pantheon headed their division in the Peasedown Stud Intermediate Ridden final. Margaret Burnett's Stowbrook Jenny Wren headed a quality filled NPS/Baileys Olympia section, as well as taking second place in the 'Wild Card' Olympia class. Charlotte Razay and Dramway Miss Pippin (owned by Marion Williams and Irene Nash of Weston super Mare) made light of the water splash in the working hunter classes, to take a place in the Fire Alarms Native Breeds WHP final. Miss Boardman's stallion Phi, took second place in the NPS/Picton Novice ridden final. The In Hand Exmoor Championship went to Dawn Williams' 3 year old stallion, Hawkwell Vervuvius (who was also placed in the Kilmannan Silver Medal M&M Championship) with Phi taking reserve.
In the event, the ground held up well and the well-supported show was deemed a success - the Three Counties staff 'worked their socks off' by getting the ground into excellent condition just in time. "The forecast had been good and we took a chance and I'm so glad we did." said Ann Nicholls (Show Vice Chairman). |

Show Report: Exmoor ponies triumphed against the appalling weather that has caused so many cancellations of this season's horse shows and events. When Dunster Country Fair suffered the same fate last week, organisers of the Exmoor Pony Society classes had just three days to try relocate the event. As this was to be a Silver Medal qualifier for the 2008 National Pony Society Championships, exhibitors were keen for the classes to continue and Joanna Webber (who deserves yet another medal) managed to secure Badgworth Arena, near Bristol to hold the classes on the original date of 25 July. The intention was to run the event in the outdoor arenas, but more torrential rain during the morning caused a move to the indoor arena where the ponies had to work around the show jumps set up for an evening event. All of the original in hand, ridden and working hunter pony classes took place and a good number of the original competitors turned up. Three year old colt, Julian Westcott's Dunkery Nuthatch, pipped his rival, Dawn Williams' Hawkwell Versuvius, in the Youngstock Championship, with Versuvius standing reserve, and then went on to take the overall championship and the silver medal. Misses Williams & Nash's gelding, Waltersgay Kingfisher, ridden by Charlotte Razay, took the Ridden Championship and reserve in hand, with their Knightoncombe Goldfinch taking Reserve Ridden.
"All competitors who came enjoyed the opportunity to compete in the dry on a superb surface," said Joanna Webber. "All gave generously to the draw which allowed us to afford to relocate at such short notice. Largest class of the day was the Novice Ridden with even the inexperienced ponies behaving very well and making this the hottest class of the day - look out Open Classes of the future!"
"Judge Mandy Hill travelled down all the way from the Warwickshire and made good use of the extra time she had to help and talk to the competitors which was much appreciated. Despite the atrocious weather, all the ponies looked superb in their coats - a credit to their handlers." Joanna Webber |

2007 STALLION PROGENY LIST |
Michael Western reports on Exmoor pony stallions producing top performing progeny...
'A total of 68 stallions had point-winning offspring in ’06. I have used as many shows as I could find totalling 28; those being 9 in the South, 8 in the Southwest, 6 in the North and Scotland and 5 in the Midlands and Wales. It is perhaps fitting that Siskin has topped the table in the year he died, while last years third has moved up to second, and last year’s winner has dropped back to third. The number in brackets behind the stallions name indicates their position in the table last year, while the number in brackets after its sires name is its position in this year’s table.'
Michael Western
