The Exmoor Pony Christmas Show 2005

The Exmoor Pony Christmas Show 2005, held at Knowle Manor Riding Centre, Timberscombe, was a great success. Organised and run by Eve and Toby Hickman, the event oozed with friendliness, laughter, good hospitality and above all - it was good fun from start to finish. Classes were well supported and of excellent quality.

SHOW REPORT - THE 2005 EXMOOR PONY CHRISTMAS SHOW
First and foremost we would like to thank every one who came to the show on Sunday. We are glad that we decided to run the show again this year, it is hard work especially on the day running around keeping everything going. The feedback that we have received has all been positive and all have said that they enjoyed themselves and as always what a wonderful atmosphere there was. This year we had the largest number of entries on the day than we have ever had, not many foals, but all the other classes were well supported. This came from local members who are always keen and we were also delighted to welcome entries from further away, for example West Sussex, Oxfordshire and Wales.

Special thanks to Mr Dai Thomas and Mrs Amanda Hill for judging, both of whom had some way to travel, also to the Show Committee and everyone who helped on the day. Our thanks also to Mrs Lammacraft her family and the staff at Knowle for allowing us to hold the show at their centre and for the preparations to the school. Finally but very importantly thanks to the show sponsors without whom the show would not be run, there is only so much our bank balance can manage.

Local Breeder Mrs Vint was very successful in the foal classes, the Foal Championship going to her own Dunkery Meadow Pipit and the Reserve of her breeding to Mrs Scott’s Dunkery Blackcap. The Owner Breeder Pair Class was won by Knightoncombe ponies K’ Bluejay and K’ Puffin owned by Miss Sam Harris. The Progeny Pair Class was won by the Hawkwell Stud with Mr & Mrs Schmidt's H’ Helicanus and Miss D Williams' Hawkwell Vesuvius. In the Senior Championship congratulations are due to Mrs Price and Mrs Please with their Champion mare Tawbitts Mystic Maggie and again congratulations to Mr & Mrs Schmidt with their stallion Liqueur as Reserve Champion. Success in the Youngstock Championship went to Miss Alison Farrell with her pony Dunkery Firecrest, also bred by Mrs Vint and Reserve Champion was Waltersgay Rosebud owned and bred by the ever supportive Mrs Williams and Mrs Nash. Dunkery Kookaborra must have delighted Mr & Mrs Schmidt by winning the Gelding Championship with Telynor as Reserve Champion with an equally delighted Mrs Poulter.

Finally the overall Supreme Championship went to Tawbitts Mystic Maggie for Mrs Price and Mrs Please, the Reserve Supreme went to Dunkery Firecrest, owned by Alison Farrell.

Showing Exmoor Ponies

Exmoor ponies are enormous fun to show In Hand or under saddle. There are special Exmoor Pony classes at shows such as Royal Bath & West, Exford Show &Dunster Show. . You can also show ponies in Mountain & Moorland classes. See the equinetourism.co.uk Events and Shows section or The Exmoor Pony Society has details of shows and events see www.exmoorponysociety.org.uk.

Showing Geldings
It is worthwhile taking your Exmoor gelding out to shows In Hand, as well as Ridden. Not only is it an excellent experience for youngsters and a good opportunity to develop your groundwork, they can do well too .
Great News for Geldings! 8 year old Gelding, Galaxy Capricorn (First Time 44/9 out of Dunkery Dunlin 78/86) has won the Exmoor Pony of the Year Championship 2005, judged by Harriet Sykes. And 4 year old gelding, Strongbow A276 (Ice Cream out of Ice Cube), was 2nd highest placed gelding in the Championship. Knightoncombe Goldrinch has also done extremely well this year.

Exmoor Pony Success Story - 5 year old Rosefinch takes the top prizes this year...
Rosefinch, a 5 year old Anchor mare born on Exmoor, and now with the Moorland Mousie Trust is having a wonderful first season under saddle and has qualified for the Horse of the Year Show!
Rosie was offered to the Trust as a yearling when it was decided that she wasn’t needed to go back out onto Exmoor as a free-living pony. She was domesticated by Trustee Juliet Rogers, who recognised her potential, and has personally funded her showing career, not only helping to raise the profile of the Exmoor ponies, but also the work of the Moorland Mousie Trust.

Her recent successes include:
1st and Reserve Champion at the NPS Spring Show in Scotland.
1st Champion M&M and Reserve Supreme at Dalry Show and won her NPS Silver Medal rosette and has qualified for Malvern.
1st in the Native Workers at The Northern Horse Show and has qualified for the Novice Workers at Malvern.
1st In-Hand, 1st Ridden and Overall Reserve Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show.

Rosie is a great ambassador for the Exmoor pony breed, and the Moorland Mousie Trust, as she travels the length and breadth of the U.K. Juliet is looking forward to taking Rosie and other Moorland Mousie Trust ponies back to their native Exmoor in August for the Exmoor Pony Breed Show at Exford.
