Staying at Castello di Santa Cristina is a fantastic way to explore Southern Tuscany, using a castle as your base for an unforgettable horse riding holiday. Located in Southern Tuscany, one and a half hours from Rome, half way between Orvieto and Siena, closely bordering the regions of Umbria and Tuscany, the splendid 17th century castle, Castello di Santa Cristina, (complete with fairytale turret) has been the home of the noble Caterini family for generations.
Accommodation: The Castle's nearby 18th Century ivy-covered farmhouse and out-buildings have been carefully restored to retain their authenticity and separated into 8 self-catering cottages, with between one and four bedroom. They are furnished with original pieces and, for guests requiring B&B, this option is also available.
Restaurant and Sports Facilities: The on-site restaurant provides delicious Tuscan cuisine and opens onto a beautiful terrace with large canopied tables. The terrace overlooks the main swimming pool and the mini football pitch. Guests staying in the detached cottage have the use of a smaller, private swimming pool. Within the restaurant area, there are also table tennis, pool and foosball tables, which are hugely popular with our younger guests. The well maintained artificial grass tennis court can be booked for your enjoyment.

Horse Riding
A paradise on horseback through the Tuscan countryside. At St. Cristina you will enjoy a fantastic horseback riding vacation in Southern Tuscany and have the opportunity to develop a special bond with your horse. The castle is a quiet retreat in the heart of Italy at the crossroads of Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio and offers fantastic horseback riding in a land full of history, mystery and rich in natural beauty. You'll meander through beautiful woods and valleys, forever changing with the seasons, at your own pace and accompanied by an experienced guide.

Riding courses and lessons are available all year round from St. Cristina's expert trainers.
Hacking around the Castle costs an average of 25 € / hour and a full day excursion including lunch and insurance is only 120 € / day / person.

Pony Riding Camps for Children at Castello di Santa Cristina Cristina

There are summer riding camps for children from 9 to 17 years old who are interested in learning or improving their riding skills. Under the direct supervision of our riding instructors, the young students will experience their first riding lessons, or in case of the more experienced riders, they will enjoy short hacks around the castle on tracks that the instructors will carefully select. The horses are a mixture of small horses and ponies perfectly suitable for this type of activity.
The campus provides full board accommodation in twin rooms with en-suite bathrooms in the renovated farm buildings below the castle. The children will experience three hours a day of practical and theoretical equestrian activities in the countryside or in the arena – the goal is for the little riders to be able to bond with the horse and gain at least a basic level of riding knowledge.
Hacking on horseback in the country requires a sound basic knowledge obtained in the arena, being aware of all the necessary precautions and taking care of the horse, as well as a good knowledge of the terrain. For those who are ready to go hacking with the instructor they will enjoy a fun and stress free day out whilst those still needing practice in the arena will be able to improve their skills in readiness for their turn out in the countryside.
The price per week per child is € 800 and it includes accommodation, meals, tutoring, riding lessons. It does not include insurance card ENGEA that is compulsory for students who are not enrolled in any equestrian organization (€ 20 / week, € 30 / annual pass).

Antonello is our Count, an ENGEA equestrian guide as well as the owner of the estate. His knowledge of the trails of the area as well as his passion for horses and for this place will make your trip really special.
Giacomo Fuortes (ENGEA) - Riding Instructor has been teaching dressage and show jumping for more than 10 years. He takes his inspiration from the Philippe Karl philosophy to mimic the horses natural movements in the wild. He also worked with Giorgia Gotti, one of the most prestigious dressage riders in Italy. He loves to build on riders skills and create a partnership with rider and horse.
Vicki – Trekking Guide
Vicki is our English guide and has been riding since she could walk. She has worked with horses in many different disciplines all over the world as she loves to travel. She worked with Arab Endurance horses in England, mustered cattle with the cowboys in Outback Australia and raced the thoroughbreds in Ireland but she is happiest when trekking out in our beautiful Tuscan countryside .
Simone Rinow – Riding Instructor / Trekking Guide
Simone is our German guide and has owned her own horses since she was 8 years old where she rode in many show jumping competitions. Since then she has worked professionally on the racecourse and in several competitive stables. She has experience with breaking in young horses and loves to teach new riders . She speaks German, Spanish, English and is currently learning Italian.

Castello di Santa Cristina is located in beautiful Southern Tuscany and surrounded by a wealth of historic and archeological sites. You may wish to simply relax or perhaps you'd like to join one of the 4×4 cross country excursions or rent a boat and travel to the islands of the beautiful Lake Bolsena. You can enjoy mountain biking - bicycles available for rent daily to explore the region independently. Other activities include walking, swimming, tennis, mini soccer, table tennis, billiards and snorkelling.
The Spa
Since the time of the Etruscans and the Romans, the local hot springs were considered a natural source of wellness with therapeutic properties. Given the areas volcanic nature, Southern Tuscany offers a vast range of thermal baths of different levels. Only 18 km away from the castle, next to the village of Sorano there is a well organized Spa. There you can swim in the warm waters and relax beneath two beautiful waterfalls. You can enjoy a natural hydromassage, a special massage or a treatment in the wellness center. Waters are flowing from natural Springs at 37° Centigrade. The area around the swimming pool is largely equipped with plenty of sun beds and umbrellas. A small river surrounds the spa and receives the outgoing native waters. It’s mixed waters come from a little stream in the woods and several other hot springs.
