Hawkwell Versuvius - Exmoor Pony Stallion standing at Holtball Exmoors
Nine year old Exmoor pony stallion, Hawkwell Versuvius, stands at stud at Holtball Exmoor Pony Stud (Herd 11). He is twice International Horse Agility World Champion (2011 and 2012), twice Exmoor Pony Society Annual Breed Show Supreme In Hand Champion (2006 - Overall Supreme, and 2010) and in 2011 was awarded the National Pony Society Gold Medal, standing Res Supreme Champion in the NPS Kilmannan Stud M&M In Hand Silver Medal Rosette Championship Final. He has won over 30 In Hand Championships at County level & National level. Bear is also ridden. He lives naturally with mares & youngstock all year round and is trained using positive, trust-based methods.
2012 - Hawkwell Versuvius and Dawn Westcott are International Horse Agility Club OHLA World Champions for the 2nd consecutive year. We are thrilled with Bear's development this year, particularly with his work at Liberty and Wild Agility - where he is turned lose in wide open spaces. You can see some video clips of his work here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Y3pkku71Sw
2012 - International Horse Agility Club Worldwide Summer of Sports Championship Final - Gold Medal at Liberty Horse Agility and Silver Medal at Advanced Level. Bear also gave a solo demo during for 2012 Exmoor Pony Festival which was a great success. We will be giving another demo on 25 August for the 2013 Exmoor Pony Festival.
Bear made a brief appearance in the show ring in 2012 and stood Royal Cornwall Champion Exmoor for the third time.
2013 - Bear is enjoying ridden activities - both dressage and show jumping - and is also enjoying being ridden sometimes by top M&M rider, Sam Roberts, who has qualified him for the NPS Peasdown and Ringside Open Championship Finals at the NPS Summer Championships.

Hawkwell Versuvius - News
2013: Hawkwell Versuvius sired a long awaited and beautiful colt foal, Holtball Baluran.
He is enjoying ridden activities and is showing an aptitude for jumping, and is continuing to develop his liberty and agility work outside of competition. Top M&M rider Sam Roberts has formed an enthusiastic bond with Bear and has already qualified him for the NPS Peasedown & Ringside championship finals after only two outings.
2012
Hawkwell Versuvius sired two lovely fillies, Holtball Isla Isabel and Holtball Mayon. Shown only very lightly, he stood Royal Cornwall Exmoor Pony Champion for the third time. Unfortunately, in June 2012, he was attacked in his field by expert stallion handlers who managed to catch him while he was running with his mares and foals. This has resulted in security having to be installed - a sign of the times and the depths to which some people will stoop. Any information on this incident is very welcome, strict confidentiality will be respected.
The year ended on a more positive note when Hawkwell Versuvius stood International Horse Agility World Champion for the second consecutive year, after competing in 21 classes in on-line, at liberty and wild agility.
August 2011:

Hawkwell Versuvius is continuing with both his Herd 11 stud duties, ridden training and Horse Agility training. He is attending riding clinics with Classical trainer, Rodrigo da Costa Matos, from the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art and basic dressage competitions, combined with lots of hacking out and development work at liberty. The International Horse Agility League (OLHA!) launched in February 2011 and Bear has done well, winning the April, May and June 2011 Pony Agility classes, with his son, Cheritonridge Mont de Brouilly in second place. Entries are submitted from across the globe, so competition for League Points fierce. Bear's temperament is outstanding and he can be ridden out bareback in a head collar.

This stunning Multi-Champion Licensed Exmoor pony stallion, affectionately known as 'Bear', stands at stud at Holtball Exmoors (Porlock Vale) and was bred by Mr John Western.
Hawkwell Versuvius was born on the moor and lived wild and free for the first six months of his life. He has been owned by Dawn and Nick Westcott since he was a foal, and with whom he has been socialised to human contact, home produced and started to saddle. Shown only lightly, Hawkwell Versuvius has won 30 In Hand Championships at County and National level and in 2011, won the Gold Medal Rosette, standing Overall Res Supreme Champion in the NPS Kilmannan Stud Mountain & Moorland In Hand Silver Medal Rosette Championship Final at Malvern. He has also twice stood Overall Supreme In Hand Champion of the Exmoor Pony Society Annual Breed Show (2006 and 2010). Hawkwell Versuvius has also won In Hand breed and M&M Championships at the Royal Bath & West Show, the Devon County and Royal Cornwall Shows, the National Pony Society Area and Summer Championships Shows, the Native Pony Association of Cornwall Breed Show and the South West Pony Association and local shows. Hawkwell Versuvius stood International Horse Agility Club World Champion in 2011, and in 2012 won a Gold Medal in the International Horse Agility Club Worldwide Summer of Sports Championship Final, as Horse Agility Liberty Champion, and a Silver Medal as Res Champion at Advanced Level. He competed against horses and ponies of all breeds, from around the world.
Hawkwell Versuvius is a working stallion who lives with mares and youngstock all year round. He is a proven sire who puts his distinctive stamp on his progeny and now has a number of progeny on the ground who have enjoyed success in the show ring and who will be important future breeding stock. His 2011 progeny took Best Foal at the Exmoor Pony Society Annual Breed Show, Dunster Show and Dunster Country Fair and 1st in the Yearlings at Devon County Show. His 2010 Anchor Herd colt foal, Fee Fi Fo Fum stood Best Foal at the Exmoor Pony Society Annual Breed Show and Dunster Show, and his yearling colt, Cheritonridge Mont de Brouilly, stood Best Yearling at Dunster Country Fair. His beautiful 2010 colt, Holtball Elbrus is so far unshown. In 2011 he put five fillies and two colts on the ground, including Holtball Krakatoa and Holtball Tambora, also unshown so far.
Hawkwell Versuvius is a superb example of the Exmoor pony breed. He has outstanding conformation, with strong bone and straight limbs, a good shoulder and substantial, well moving back end. With his strong, elastic hock action, Bear is enjoying varied ridden work and is trained with both Classical riding techniques and natural horsemanship. He has a beautiful head, with well shaped jaw, large ‘toady eyes’, clear mealy markings and black points. He has a generous, charismatic temperament and is kind to his mares, foals and people. Bear is showing an aptitude for the new sport of Horse Agility, in which he currently stands top ranked stallion in the world, and he is currently learning to negotiate these challenging obstacles ‘at liberty’. Hawkwell Versuvius is sponsored by Dodson & Horrell, to whom we are very grateful for their support and encouragement.

This is a partnership-building equestrian sport where horse and handler face obstacles and task. Perfect for Exmoor ponies, with their intelligence, problem-solving character, courage and immense trainability. It has already enhanced our ridden relationship as we become more of a team. No sticks, pulling or shouting are allowed, so this is a sport that rewards good horsemanship. More information on Horse Agility
