Exford Show 2005 - The Exmoor Pony Society Breed Show
There were an amazing 106 entries for the EPS Breed Show this year and many comments on the the excellent condition and turn out of the ponies shown. Ridden classes showed a rise in standard and numbers and it was refreshing to see good horsemanship from even the youngest exhibitors, particularly with M/dames Price & Please whose treatment and care of their ponies was a delight to see in the ring and outside.

Showing Exmoor Ponies

Exmoor ponies are enormous fun to show In Hand or under saddle. There are special Exmoor Pony classes at shows such as Royal Bath & West, Exford Show &Dunster Show. . You can also show ponies in Mountain & Moorland classes. See the equinetourism.co.uk Events and Shows section or The Exmoor Pony Society has details of shows and events see www.exmoorponysociety.org.uk.

Showing Geldings
It is worthwhile taking your Exmoor gelding out to shows In Hand, as well as Ridden. Not only is it an excellent experience for youngsters and a good opportunity to develop your groundwork, they can do well too . Currently, geldings are unfortunately often put in to Stallion or Mare classes, which is fine if you have a judge who judges on merit, irrespective of sex - but not so good if stallions and mares are automatically placed before geldings. Hopefully, over time and as the numbers of entries increase, geldings will have their own classes - and in mixed classed, the value of geldings is appreciated, as well as breeding stock.
Great News for Geldings! 8 year old Gelding, Galaxy Capricorn (First Time 44/9 out of Dunkery Dunlin 78/86) has won the Exmoor Pony of the Year Championship 2005, judged by Harriet Sykes. And 4 year old gelding, Strongbow A276 (Ice Cream out of Ice Cube), was placed 6th in the Championship.

Exmoor Pony Success Story - 5 year old Rosefinch takes the top prizes this year...
Rosefinch, a 5 year old Anchor mare born on Exmoor, and now with the Moorland Mousie Trust is having a wonderful first season under saddle and has qualified for the Horse of the Year Show!
Rosie was offered to the Trust as a yearling when it was decided that she wasn’t needed to go back out onto Exmoor as a free-living pony. She was domesticated by Trustee Juliet Rogers, who recognised her potential, and has personally funded her showing career, not only helping to raise the profile of the Exmoor ponies, but also the work of the Moorland Mousie Trust.

Her recent successes include:
1st and Reserve Champion at the NPS Spring Show in Scotland.
1st Champion M&M and Reserve Supreme at Dalry Show and won her NPS Silver Medal rosette and has qualified for Malvern.
1st in the Native Workers at The Northern Horse Show and has qualified for the Novice Workers at Malvern.
1st In-Hand, 1st Ridden and Overall Reserve Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show.

Rosie is a great ambassador for the Exmoor pony breed, and the Moorland Mousie Trust, as she travels the length and breadth of the U.K. Juliet is looking forward to taking Rosie and other Moorland Mousie Trust ponies back to their native Exmoor in August for the Exmoor Pony Breed Show at Exford. Showing - Bath & West 2005

Exmoor Show Results: Royal Bath & West 2005
From the Exmoor National Park Press Release:
Four year old Exmoor Pony gelding, Strongbow (A276), from the Anchor Herd, bred by Mrs R Wallace, has taken Reserve Champion Exmoor at the Royal Bath & West Show 2005. It is rare for an Exmoor Pony gelding to win such a prestigious award at County level as they compete against stallions and mares, often in the same class.

What makes Strongbow's win at Royal Bath & West exciting is that it will hopefully help people to realise that Exmoor geldings are well worth taking on and producing. The Moorland Mousie Trust works hard to help the colt foals taken off the moor each autumn find suitable 'foster parents' to socialise and handle them for that crucial first winter before gelding the following spring or autumn. Once the ponies get used to a more domesticated environment and learn to trust and form bonds with humans, they can be brought on and make ideal riding, driving and showing ponies.

The Exmoor Pony is a recognised rare breed, thought to be unaltered by man for thousands of years and, through the dedication of Exmoor farmers and breeders, is still able to live and flourish on the open moor. However, there are only about 1,200 pure-bred Exmoor Ponies worldwide (less than Giant Pandas!) with several herds living free on Exmoor. It is the colt foals that are most at risk each year as the surplus ponies are taken off the moor at weaning time and it has been difficult to always find the right homes, where they can make the transition from free-living, unhandled ponies to domesticated ponies.

Sourced from the Exmoor Pony Society

The2005 Exmoor Pony Society Stallion Parade was held on 4 May at Ralegh's Cross Inn, Exmoor.

The two stallion parades (Exmoor in May and the Midlands in September) are held to give Exmoor pony stallion owners the opportunity to display their stallions and for information about them to be included in the commentary. It is an occasion on which mare owners can see a variety of stallions of varying ages and from different geographical locations to aid their decision making with regard to where to send their mares.
