Edgcott House - Enter a different world |
Dating from the 17th century, Edgcott House is a gracious rambling country pile quietly situated just outside Exford. The extensive grounds include a charming secluded garden, paddocks, ancient woodlands and a small lake. Beyond is some of the best hacking in the country

The spirit of yesterday is very much alive and kicking (or taking a gentle snooze) at Edgcott House, situated in the heart of Exmoor National Park.
Here guests are invited to sit round the blazing fire and toast teacakes on iron forks that have seen better days. Or to laze in the summer sunlight amongst the wild flowers and glorious weeds.
People walk politely round the occasional pile of discarded wellies and head collars. And apologise nicely to our dogs for sitting on their favourite chairs. Guest’s dogs have been known to join them...

The Main house
All 7 bedrooms at Edgcott House are country-quiet, cosy, unpretentious and conducive to a good night’s sleep. All are ensuite with good old fashioned-sized bathrooms which have been recently refurbished to very a high standard.
An undoubted feature in the main house is the Long Room (all 50 elegant foot of it). This is where guests can laze around and linger over a leisurely breakfast or supper. And admire the astonishing wall murals.
An equally astonishing feature is the delicious Edgcott Marathon breakfast. For the not so hungry, a scaled down version of this, or several delicious alternatives are available.
Delicious hearty home cooked suppers are also served, freshly prepared using local produce.

Horse and Dog Heaven at Edgcott House... |
|
Exmoor is 267 square miles of beauty and wilderness, criss-crossed by only the occasional road, home to a few villages and a scattering of hamlets. Making Exmoor unsurpassable hacking and dog walking country.
Swathes of uninterrupted open moorland give way to the hog back cliffs and spectacular seascapes of the north Devon and Somerset coasts. With its rushing river valleys and dense forest glades it is the home of the magnificent red deer and the mealy muzzled Exmoor ponies. Overhead buzzards hover in the air, together with the Kestrel, Sparrow Hawks, and Razor Bills Names such as Alderman’s Barrow, Bats Castle, and Dead Woman’s Lane give hint to the dark age history of the area.
Traditionally Exmoor has always offered exceptional walking, shooting, fishing and riding. If it’s a concentration of culture you’re after, the city of Exeter is a comfortable drive away. |
