The Bar W Ranch makes a perfect holiday for families, adults, singles and groups alike. Surrounded by 3,000 acres, guests feel they are far from civilisation in this serene wilderness, located on beautiful Spencer Lake - yet just 3.5 miles down the road is the vibrant resort town of Whitefish, offering the finest in shopping, dining, theatre and nightlife.
The Bar W is nestled at the base of Spencer Mountain, between two pine-covered ridges. The ranch consists of a 6,200-square-foot lodge, cabin suites, glamping, indoor and outdoor horseback-riding arenas, stables, a barn, play meadow, an entertainment area and a gazebo on the lake - all helping to make the Bar W an idyllic piece of paradise for guests to soak in - all year long.
The Bar W Horseback Riding Program
Experienced staff and well trained horses make for an incredible horseback riding experience at The Bar W Ranch. The riding programs include hundreds of thousands of acres to explore in the mountainous Montana terrain surrounding the ranch, the foothill country of the Rocky Mountain Front range, and the wide open prairie of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation - Montana Big Sky Country. Many of the foothill rides are all day rides with lunch in a meadow. You’ll begin to recognize names, like the Flathead, the Two Medicine, Buffalo Bridge and the Marias Rivers.
You can also enjoy the riding events that take place in the indoor and outdoor arenas, such as horsemanship clinics, barrel racing, egg races, pole bending and more. There are cowpoke lessons for beginners, and for those more experienced cowboys and cowgirls, advanced lessons that include roping, team penning and sorting cattle. The Bar W is a horseman’s dream. In addition to the exciting and challenging ranch sorting and team penning in the arena, some cattle work is also available on the ranch.
Horse Training, Lessons, and Clinics
You'll have the opportunity to watch the highly experienced Bar W trainers working with the horses and training them for riding - see first hand the amount of effort that goes into it. Feel free to take a lesson and strengthen your abilities or attend any one of the clinics regularly held at the ranch.
A Wealth of Outdoor Activities at The Bar W Ranch
In addition to horseback riding, there is plenty for all ages to do and discover at The Bar W. Guests are invited to explore the entire property - watch trainers working the horses, help with the chores (if you like, of course), fish for big pike on Spencer Lake, hike the miles and miles of trails, mountain bike, swim in the lake, throw horseshoes, or play badminton, volleyball, or a leisurely game of pool. You can even test your archery skills or try your hand at breaking some clay pigeons.
Winter Activities
In the Winter Months you can still ride horseback through the trails or in our indoor arena, snowshoe or cross-country ski right out the back door, skate or ice fish on Spencer Lake, take a sleigh ride or have dinner at the gazebo right on the lake. With Big Mountain Ski and Summer Resort just 7 miles away, you are minutes from incredible skiing and snowboarding. Or, you can just sit back, relax and observe the beauty of Montana's wildlife, such as whitetail and mule deer, moose, bears, eagles, coyotes, wolves and mountain lions. The Flathead Valley is a year-round playground for families, singles, and groups of all ages with whitewater rafting, stream and lake fishing, nine world-class golf courses, boating, hot air ballooning, skiing, back-country skiing, four other cross-country trail systems, snowmobiling, dog sledding, and more. Glacier National Park is 23 miles from the ranch, and the drive there is almost as pretty as the park itself.

About The Bar W Guest Ranch and The Leishman Family |
The idea of the Bar W originated in 2000. It began with a father’s longing to escape the rigors and chaos of the office and stave off burnout.
Dave Leishman, future owner of The Bar W, came to Montana with his two young daughters, Meghan (age 9) and Emily (age 7). Both girls had only about a month’s worth of horseback lessons under their belts. They were persuaded to head West and make the trip to the Bear Creek Ranch. In the spirit of true Montana hospitality, Bear Creek's wranglers worked with Dave and the girls on their horsemanship skills and under their tutelage,
Dave’s fears and doubts about his riding skills quickly abated. In no time, he and the girls were riding to the tops of ridges, where they could gaze at the Big Sky countryside for 130 miles in every direction.“We went up ridges and down ridges that I never imagined a horse could go,” Dave said. It turned out to be a vacation for the ages – one of those life-changing, priority-altering experiences many people wait a lifetime for. It was a whole package - the riding, the western way of life, the rodeos, the work, and the people.
Dave and the girls drew closer on each subsequent trip to Montana, and it was an adventure that they shared year after year. He was hooked. So much so that after the next four annual trips, the former world-class skier and outdoorsman decided that a yearly excursion to Montana just was not enough anymore. Dave wanted a ranch of his own, a place where he could help people live the same experience he did on his first visit.
Dave and his wife Jan joined with Dave’s brother Greg to make the dream come true. Now, having ridden some of the toughest trails, Dave and the girls understand it from a beginner’s as well as a veteran rider’s perspectives. Their experience has provided them with a keen understanding of our guests’ reservations about riding when they arrive. The Bar W knows how to tailor the guests’ riding experiences to their capabilities.
“Our first trip to Montana literally changed our lives – we hope you give us a chance to make a difference in your life as well. We will do our best to make sure that the joy of your stay lasts a lifetime too!”
