Experience the wilds of Argentina with creature comforts and excellent horses...

Estancia Los Potreros allows you to experience the wildlife, scenery and culture of Argentina on horseback - and, if you wish, try your hand or brush up your Polo skills - while not abandoning the creature comforts provided by excellent accommodation, great food, the best tack and fabulous horses

Riding Holidays at Estancia Los Potreros - Argentina

Estancia Los Potreros is set at an altitude of 3,000 ft in a beautiful reserve at the top of the Cordoba hills in the center of Argentina. The estancia dates from 1574 when breeding mules for the silver mines in Peru was the main activity. Today it's an idyllic retreat for horsemen and nature lovers.

This 6,000 acre organic working farm breeds Aberdeen-Angus cattle and Paso Peruano (Peruvian Paso) horses and has been in the same Anglo-Argentine family for four generations. The owners have a passion for conservation and the preservation of the environment and you'll find the highest standards of accommodation, combining the pleasures of estancia life with exceptional riding.

Some of the many activities on offer include Home rides, long-distance trail rides, polo, assisting the gauchos with herding horses - or simply relaxing by the pool. The riding terrain is exciting, ranging from steep rocky paths down tree-studded gullies, to open, grassy hilltops. Los Potreros is a year-round destination and it is well known for its fabulous horses.

" Los Potreros is a place for people who appreciate fine horses and know how to ride horseback. However, there are horses for every ability, and beginners are welcome. The ranch's forte for horse lovers is its Peruvian Paso horses, which here are used to round up cattle on the rocky hillsides ... The one assigned to me gave me one of the smoothest canters I have ever enjoyed, in addition to the superb swift ambling walk that is innate in the breed."

Accommodation for Guests

The family-run Estancia Los Potreros offers high standards of accommodation, food and personal attention to detail.

Traditional estancia buildings have been sympathetically converted to provide comfortable accommodation with all the creature comforts. All bedrooms are individually decorated with antique furniture and pictures reflecting the history and culture of the area, and at Los Potreros, you are never far from a bookcase packed with an eclectic selection of reading material!

Food is homemade from the freshest produce, with much of the fare provided from the farm's organic vegetable gardens, orchards and free range chickens and cattle. European favourites are balanced with a range of traditional dishes, and no visit to Argentina would be complete without regular 'Asados'.

Horse Riding at Estancia Los Potreros

The horse riding is centred around the daily Estancia life - with the occasional overnight excursion across the Sierras.

The tack is English and the horses are chosen to suit the ability of the rider. The horse riding 'style' is 'Western' and very relaxed. All horseback riding abilities can be catered for.

Local horseback rides
Every day the farm offers new challenges - guests can choose to be involved in the daily activities, or are free to take one of the many horseback rides, returning to base. There is total flexibility regarding both the length of stay and the horseback riding possibilities.

A half or full day of horseback riding on the estancia might involve following streams through valleys to the "top of the world" with stunning views of the punilla valley and the Sierras Grandes beyond. Or cool off under a waterfall or by shady rockpools. Lunch can be back at the estancia or may be a picnic in the hills or by a stream.

The Trail Rides
Our trail rides strike out north into the Sierras Chicas, crossing through beautiful countryside over varied terrain. Nights away from Los Potreros are spent camping, or in local homesteads, and our trail rides allow visitors to experience rural life in Argentina from the privileged viewpoint of horseback.

Horse Riding Experiences on offer at Estancia Los Potreros...
1) Enjoy a full day's horseback ride to explore Candongas C1600 church. Return to Los Potreros past the "Estancita" and the local Dominican church.

2) Spend the day visiting the Cañada de los Condores and swim under the waterfall. Picnic by the crystal clear stream.

3) A visit to Canada del Molle and Potrero de Niz on our beautiful Peruano horses to experience a change in the scenery and to soak up some of the history of the estancia. Sip the ice cool white Torrontes wine while the steaks are sizzling on the fire and a gaucho is trying to fish a trout out of the river.

4) Ride on horseback towards the Quebrachitos, past the Bellstone rock. From a high point, see the spectacular view of Cordoba City in the distance and the pampas beyond. Visit the small local museum commemorating the life of the artist, Guido Buffo, and learn about his tragic story by visiting the unusual commemorative chapel he built and painted.

5) Ride on horseback to the far end of the Estancia Chiviquin. Enjoy an "asado" or a picnic lunch. There is a chance to climb to the water divide and have breath-taking views of the Sierras Grandes, Carlos Paz and the lush valley of Punilla.

6) An overnight stay at Chiche and Menta's farm is always popular as is an overnight camping stay at Plomo's Estancia under the Pan de Azucar.
Polo at Estancia Los Potreros

No visit to Argentina is complete without trying your hand at Polo - the sport of Kings! Beginners are welcome and encouraged to try this noble sport and Polo tuition is available. At Estancia Los Potreros, the Polo is cheerful and fun and highly addictive!

Country Polo
Country Polo is an introduction to polo and is aimed at the novice or occasional player who would like to improve their Polo, combined with enjoying varied and interesting rides in fabulous countryside. Polo Weeks, with an in house tournament, can be arranged at most times of the year with a minimum of four players. Professional polo tuition is also available.

In a typical day, a two to three hour morning ride will be followed by lunch at the estancia. Swimming, a siesta or reading a book will fill the warm hours. After tea we ride to the polo ground and take a lesson playing some chukkas at the end of the day, followed by a candelit dinner back at the farm. The week is ended with an in-house tournament, often accompanied by players from the local towns. All of this takes place in a beautiful setting with excellent company, all washed down with our own label wines.

The Horses at Estancia Los Potreros

The horses at Estancia Los Potreros are a source of great pride to the family. They are all bred on the estancia and well cared for and, as a result, have exceptionally soft mouths, are well mannered and are in excellent condition.

Most are either Criollos or Paso Peruanos (Peruvian Pasos) with some crossbreeds. The horses are used constantly on the farm, moving cattle over the terrain and taking part in farm work, which ensures that they are responsive, sure footed and willing animals for guests to ride and enjoy on their holiday.

Environmentally Friendly Tourism - How this holiday makes a difference

Estancia Los Potreros is a small family-run business, where tourism blends in carefully with the working cattle farm (Aberdeen Angus) and stud farm and works in symbiosis with the local eco-systems. Tourists are encouraged to learn about the region and all activities are focused on enjoying the natural beauty of the area. Los Potreros is a totally organic farming, with no use of growth hormones, pesticides, insecticides or chemical fertilizers. Pasture is not overgrazed and stock levels are kept to a minimum level that allows the natural grasses to regenerate. The cattle and horses are free range and the cattle eat back certain paddocks to build natural fire breaks in the winter.

Food is sourced locally and supplemented where possible from our own organic vegetable gardens and orchards. All waste and washing processes are carried out in a manner that is is sensitive to the local environment. Although recycling is just beginning in Argentina, bottles are recycled and wine bottles are taken back to the winery to fill up with Los Potreros wine! Most energy is naturally produced (90% wind or solar generated), and a generator is used for back up purposes.
