The Brecon Beacons National Park is the perfect place for horse lovers. Our spectacular scenery and wealth of wildlife create some of the best riding in Europe. We are close to excellent road and rail links, yet a world away from the bustle of urban life.
We have thousands of acres of hills, moors and fields, criss-crossed by ancient tracks and lanes. This creates a riding paradise, where you can ride all day, sharing the views with just the soaring buzzards and the only delays here are for leisurely pub lunches while your mount grazes outside.
The Park has plenty for riders and non-riders alike: from walking and canoeing to shopping and castles. And whether you want to stay in a luxurious hotel, B&B, bunkhouse, self-catering cottage or camp.
Where to Ride
The National Park has over 600 miles of bridle paths and tracks, so riders are spoilt for choice. Most treks and hacks are guided, but if you are a more experienced rider and want to set off on your own, each centre will have suggestions when you hire your horse.
These change according to conditions, so follow any advice carefully. In fine weather the most spectacular views tend to be on the mountains, while the lowland routes are beautiful and rich in wildlife at any time. Several long-distance routes are being developed on the Epynt, in Crychan Fforest and at Torfaen. The Epynt Way will link to the Crychan Fforest and eventually the Three Rivers Ride.
This last is first to be launched by the British Horse Society. It is a 35-mile trail from Hay to Brecon along the western flank of the Black Mountains. There are plenty of farms, pubs and small hotels willing to put up both horse and rider along the route and several centres will provide guides, horses and horse boxes for riders wanting a challenge. wwwhorseriding.breconbeacons.com

Hay Bluff on the edge of the Brecon Beacons. The Three Rivers ride in Wales takes you through 35 miles of stunning scenery and crosses the final river, the river Usk. Rosettes to commemorate your achievement can be purchased from The National Park Visitor Centre.Maps and leaflets for the Worcestershire & Herefordshire section are available from The British Horse Society.

Crychan Forest is beautifully situated at the gateway of the Cambrian Mountains on the border of the Brecon Beacons National Park. With over 6 way marked routes varying in distance from 5 miles to 25 miles. This new opportunity has been lovingly designed by West Wales Trekking & Riding Association and the Endurance GB Society. There are four car parks with special large bays for horse boxes. Two of the car parks even have fenced sandy corrals. Access onto the Epynt Way can be made at three locations from the waymarked trails. |
Bed & Breakfast for Horses
The concept of putting up a horse and rider for the night seems novel today, but in fact it dates back at least two millennia. Until a century ago most British hotels, pubs and even farms would think it perfectly normal to house a rider and their horse.
Elsewhere this has long-since vanished, but such age-old hospitality lingers on in the Brecon Beacons. We have a network of accommodation providers happy to make sureboth you and your horse have a comfortable night and are fresh for the trail first thing in the morning.
Using a local centre you can plan your own route along the hundreds of miles of local path and by-ways. After that it’s up to you to make your own way, moving as fast or as slowly as you like; choosing your own watering holes and stopping to admire the view as often as takes your fancy. You can either choose a circular route or arrange a pick-up for yourself and your horse when you reach your destination.

There is a wide range of stables and riding centres across the Park, each offering a unique variety of treks, hacks and trails - not to mention carriage driving and courses.

Welsh Mountain ponies
Welsh mountain ponies and cobs have been running free in our uplands since Roman times. Over the centuries the harsh climate and poor grazing meant only the strongest, fittest and most intelligent animals survived. These semi-wild ponies were probably always used by local farmers, but during the 18th century their unique qualities began to be recognised further afield.
Many worked in the coal mines of South Wales, for example, and in the early 20th century others were exported to Australia and America. Despite this, they slowly fell from fashion and now there are just 800 registered pure mares left. They are recognised as a rare breed and many local farms are working to ensure their survival. They remain the backbone of local riding businesses and to see them in action you have only to try trekking.
Lluest Horse and Pony Trust - Horse & Pony Rescue Centre |
Housing, feeding, shoeing and veterinary care require time, skill and money. Most owners love their horses and look after them well, but unfortunately a minority neglect their animals. Many end up at the Lluest Horse and Pony Trust, a rescue centre for horses, ponies and donkeys at a 40-acre farm on the west of the National Park. It aims to restore them to full health, and find new loving loan homes. Sadly, some never fully recover and remain at Lluest for life. The Trust normally has around 30 horses on its 40 acre farm between Llandeilo and Llandovery. It welcomes visitors, but asks them to ring first, 01550 740661. www.lluesthorseandponytrust.org.uk
