Understanding Animals

Understanding Animals offers you the opportunity to improve your relationship with your horse, pony or pet - to know, understand and help them better and find resolutions to any behavioural, emotional or physical problems.

Understanding Animals is run by Faye Stacey. She aims to bring understanding between animals and their owners and help them with all kinds of problems. Faye works with all animals – so far she has helped dogs, cats, horses, ponies, goats, a cockatoo and even a wolf!

Understanding Horses - Courses & Clinics for 2010
Faye Stacey is running a series of Clinics & Courses in 2010. Understanding Horses runs confidence building, ground handling and equine problem solving courses for horse owners and enthusiasts.

The one-day horse courses are based at people4ponies, a charitable organisation located near Witheridge in Devon that specialises in the rehabilitation, training and rehoming of wild and traumatised ponies. The courses combine theory with lots of practical "hands-on" interaction with the ponies to help clients to understand horses, to interact with and handle them in a safe way and to learn how to solve equine problems. With 7 rescue ponies available, course participants are sure to find their perfect equine friend for the day!

Animal Communication

Animal communication offers you the opportunity to:
• Understand the emotional and behavioural issues of your animals and find ways to resolve them.
• Improve the relationship between you and your pet, horse or pony, developing your understanding of each other.
• Find out what an animal wants or needs.
• Locate physical problems, which can then be explored by vets and health specialists. Sometimes it is also possible to shed light on the causes of health problems.
• Deal with bereavement after the death of a pet. This could be helping an owner or another animal that has been affected by the death.

Owners often use communication as a way to find answers to all kinds of questions they have about their animals…Is your saddle comfortable? Why have you stopped eating your food? Why do you get cross when I do up your girth? Do you have any advice about how I can help you better?...

In order to become a qualified animal communication practitioner, Faye had to achieve a minimum 90% accuracy level in exams with a vet, an animal behaviourist, an animal welfare specialist and an animal trainer. Whatever the behavioural or emotional problem an animal has, Faye believes the best way forward is to build trust between animal and human and to work with understanding. Animal communication sessions are available either by phone consultation or home visit.

Oscar the dog case study
Oscar the dog (aged 7) and his owner Jane – Oscar had a fear of vets and fireworks – Jane shares the results of a phone consultation…

"Oscar's personality, fears, favourite walks and toys were described to me by Faye. Truly amazing and very, very accurate…Faye put his worries about the vet down to visits as a puppy, he was neutered and had his dew claws removed - a process he found extremely scary and traumatic"

Results:
Vets: This has been truly remarkable. On Oscar's annual visit this year I had no problem getting him into the surgery and onto the scales. Before the animal communication it would take 30 minutes or more just to get him through the door to the vets! On entering the examination room Oscar, though still quite nervous, allowed the vet to examine him quite thoroughly - the vet had never been able to do this before. I was a very proud owner!
Fireworks: During November the only issue was barking each time a firework went off. Before the communication Oscar would start chewing and ripping things up and be pacing around when the fireworks were happening.
Visitors: I realised that I am anxious about what might happen when Oscar is there when I am opening the door. To help us both, I now put Oscar in another room just for a short time before he is introduced to visitors. He seems happy with this.

"Since having the animal communication session, I can definitely say that my bond and understanding of Oscar has increased to another level. We seem to be able to understand each other's emotions - a truly amazing and wonderful experience. I would strongly recommend animal communication to anybody who wants a better understanding/bond with their animals or just to find out how they can help understand their pet’s feelings and what they can do to help. It might be that a very small change in daily routine could make a big difference to their animals."
Reiki Healing

Faye is a practitioner of Reiki, a form of energy “work” that promotes healing and can be applied to animals as well as people. It helps the whole “person”, including body, emotions, mind and spirit, creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation, feelings of peace, security and well-being. It can help traumatised animals release emotion - helping them to become more balanced and enabling them to become more comfortable in the presence of people (see photo). Reiki supports animal communication so well. It can work alongside conventional treatment to speed recovery from physical problems, help support owners and animals through the last stages of an animal’s life, help rebalance the partnership between people and their animals and be applied to situations which an animal might find difficult. Animals are usually very happy to have Reiki – it is never forced upon them. Most importantly it is safe because an animal only takes the amount of energy it needs. Reiki can be given hands on, hands off or from a distance.

Right: Traumatised Ebony, who was trembling when Faye first took her lead rope, enjoys a “hands off Reiki” session and quickly relaxes in the presence of a human, releases some emotion and when finished, remains calm and chilled out to have her feet trimmed.

Help with Equine Problems

► Do you have a pushy pony?
► Do you have problems catching or headcollaring your horse/pony?
► Does your horse seem unnecessarily scared by everyday things?
► Is your child feeling frustrated with their pony or are they not doing quite as well as they’d like?
► Do you want to make your riding experience more enjoyable?
► Do you have a problem with your horse/pony and feel unsure of how to resolve it?

Faye can offer practical help to owners by introducing methods that help resolve problems they experience everyday with their horses and ponies. By visiting owners and their horses and listening to their experiences and observing their situation, it is possible to decide the best way forward to help owners address problems. Practical sessions are about teaching both the horse and the owner and every session should finish on a positive note for all. Learning to understand and help each other better can only lead to you having a better, more successful relationship with your horse or pony.

Case Studies and Testimonials

Mary writes:
“Faye has a very special, individual approach, which makes her lessons stand out from standard lessons. Faye connects very well with everyone, but especially younger children. She understands how ponies think, and continually reads their body language. This she conveys to her pupils throughout the lesson, which imparts huge confidence, as they start to think like a horse and understand them and be in control.”

Celeste, aged 9 writes:
“I had a lot of lessons with Faye, usually about 2 or 3 weeks apart. When I first started to learn to ride, I was worried about being mean to the pony - I had seen people hit, kick and whip their horses. I was so happy that I could learn to be in charge without doing that…What I liked about Faye teaching me was, she explained it all, and always talked to me in a grownup sort of way, and she didn't mind if I couldn't do it or got it wrong, and she encouraged me. I felt like I really learnt a lot, and I never fell off, and I hope I never will!”

Cathy writes:
"Taz is my lovely horse (well to me he certainly is lovely and much more!) To the best of my knowledge I have always had a fantastic relationship with him. However, when I heard about Faye from a friend and some of her fantastic work, curiosity got the better of me and I wanted to see if I could understand how Taz sees his life and how he interacts with me.……Well some of the things that Faye picked up about Taz were pretty remarkable. From the way I presented his apples to him; the fact that he related to his summer sheet which is the first one he has ever had; what he thinks of The Equine Touch; my riding! The outcome for me is that I am confident that Taz is happy, relaxed and in tune with me and most aspects of his life - from which I can gain great satisfaction. Plus I have few pointers also to look out for!"
