The Nonius is an Anglo norman line of horses bred in the formal imperial stud farm in Mezhegyesh, but which
also spread into Yugoslavia, Romania and into southern Slovakia. Nonius was born in 1810 in one of the stud
farms of Calvados in Normandy from an Anglo norman mare and sired by a thoroughbred, Orion.

After arriving at Mezhegyesh Nonius became quite a potent sire. When he died in 1838 he left behind 79
stallions and 137 mares. Curiously Nonius wasn't really a beautiful horse but none of his offspring seemed to carry his looks. All of his offspring were properly named after him with lineage numbers from which
the Mezhegyesh Stud founded a line after him that from the year 1817 grew to 284 stallions and 3203 mares
by the year 1890.

Nowadays the Nonius is a popular horse in Hungary, there are 2 types, a slighter larger looking horse used for carriage work and a smaller type which is ideal for a hobby horse. They are all rounders and clever horses. The Hungarian herders, Csikos, use them a lot for their horse displays.

I have a nonius, his name is Chodas and he is so lovely!

The pics are of him.

Hi Chodas
The Nonius horses look amazing. Where is it possible to see a full breed profile and learn more about them?

Probably here very shortly you will be able to see a full breed profile.I had an email from admin and they want to make one. So check back soon and all the info should be here.

In the mean time you can try the mezohegyes stud farm but it will probably be all in Hungarian and I don't know the exact liink.

Hi,

Thats great I'm sure she is a beauty. How old?

Also where did you buy her? I don't know if mine is just a particlary patient and clever horse (and extremely relaxed for a stallion) of if this is a trait of the breed. I have read in the past they make exceptional hobby horses and are often used to pull carriages too.

Here in Hungary there are quite popular but I don't know about in the UK, many people I asked had never heard of a Nonius.

Happy riding.
