Western Counties Equine Clinic - Equine Veterinary Practice - Horse Vets
|
Western Counties Equine Clinic was formed in April 2000 by the merging of two well-established and respected veterinary practices - Brian Crawford in Devon and Andrew Walker in Taunton.
The Practice has created a purpose built centre for the treatment and rehabilitation of horses. The investment in the latest radiography, surgical and laboratory equipment combined with the arrangement for visits from some of the most eminent surgeons eliminates the need for horses and owners to travel long distances for specialist treatment. |

Dentistry Services offered by Western Counties Equine Clinic |
DENTISTRY
As many of our regular clients know, we realise the importance of the horse's mouth. To this end all our vets have undergone extensive training in modern equine dentistry. We are BEVA/BAEDT examined and trained and have invested in modern efficient rasps and motorised tools to ensure a thorough and complete dental service. Our radiographic and surgical facilities allow us to treat complex cases and perform surgery where indicated.
All our vets carry a full mouth speculum to allow a thorough oral examination, a syringe to flush the mouth and a full array of efficient rasps. Dental mirrors are carried to allow close inspection of the occlusal (grinding) surfaces.
Geriatric Dentistry
We believe that older horses should be examined regularly to prolong an efficient masticatory mechanism for as long as possible. Excessive rasping in the older horse should be avoided but removal of sharp enamel points and careful correction of abnormalities remains important. We also have the facilities and equipment to allow extraction of loose teeth, treatment of painful periodontal pocketing and opening of diastema (areas of food accumulation between teeth).
Sedatives and Pain Killers
To allow thorough and safe examinations and treatments, we often use intravenous sedatives. With the use of sedatives, we find that detailed examinations are possible even with the most nervous patients. With thorough examination pathology can be found at an early stage and addressed promptly rather than missed and treated too late. Pain killers are often used in combination with the sedatives. Tetanus cover is essential and immediate cover can be provided if necessary.
Chris Johannson is one of the very small number of vets in the country to have passed the British Equine Veterinary Association EDT exams. These tough exams are generally recognised as the Gold Standard for Equine Dental Technicians and have, as yet, been passed by relatively few Equine Dentists in the South West (a list is available at www.beva.org.uk). Chris' success, along with the acquisition of a new piece of motorised dental equipment, will enable the practice to treat a wider range of dental abnormalities with greater flexibility. The 'powerfloat' is very useful for treating large hooks and overgrowths but can also be used for routine reduction of sharp enamel points. Contact the practice for more details on 01884 841100. |
