The Saddle Exchange Ltd |
Saddle Exchange is a family owned business which includes both The Native Pony Saddle Company & The ReactorPanel Saddle Company. We offer a friendly, personalised service to all of our customers and a range of specialist saddles for all breed and all disciplines, as well as an extensive selection of accessories including bridles, girths & numnahs.
We have a large, well stocked mail order base and we have saddle fitters covering the UK and most parts of Europe. Our fitters work closely with back specialists where needed, which has resulted in us producing a basic home study course in saddle fitting for owners who want to be more informed about the effects of saddles on their horses backs. Please contact us for more details. |
Reactor Panel Saddles |
The ReactorPanel saddle is the most dynamic of the innovative saddles on the market. Not only are the panels flexible and almost infinitely adjustable, but the connection between the saddle and the panel is Sorbothane, which is a dense patented rubber designed to isolate vibration while absorbing energy and impact. No other saddle has this system, which absorbs shock and concussion, while moving with the horse's back, flexing as the horse moves.
ReactorPanel simply refines well-proven function by utilizing the most modern materials. ReactorPanel have large panels maximising the weight bearing surface, which distributes pressure over the widest possible area. Different panel lengths ensure that the system can accommodate average, long or short backs.
To provide shoulder freedom, ReactorPanel is designed so the front edge of the panel deliberately rests over the scapula. This part of the panel is non weight bearing. The tree points are specially shortened to end above the body mass of the scapula. When the shoulders rotate backwards they slide easily under the panels without encountering rigid resistance.
ReactorPanel's flexible panels and shock absorbing discs follow the changing contours of the back in motion. The panels undulate with the back under the centre of the saddle. Independently attached, the panels compress and flex on either side of the horse's spine in response to the back motion.
Four shock-absorbing Sorbothane discs attach the panels to the saddle. The discs come in three thicknesses, which allows almost infinite repositioning to custom fit the saddle. The combination allows for changes in panel angles so that one saddle can be adjusted to accommodate many horses.
When it comes to comfort we believe it is possible for both horse and rider to be extremely comfortable in the same saddle.
Freedom of movement can often be observed immediately. The stride lengthens and gaits improve noticeably, especially the lengthened or extended trot. Some horses offer a more controlled and balanced canter. The shoulder freedom allowed by the saddle expands lateral capabilities in movements. Many riders report that, for the first time, their horses move freely forward while travelling down hill in a ReactorPanel saddle.
The ReactorPanel saddle is designed to produce low even pressure underneath the entire saddle. This encourages the horse to work from the hindquarters and to come "through" with a relaxed back. A pain free horse can achieve and maintain the round frame so important for athletic performance in all disciplines - dressage, endurance, cross country, jumping or just hacking.
DRESSAGE
LUCINDA MCALPINE
Lucinda McAlpine is one of the country's leading experts, not only as a dressage rider and trainer, but also in the development and use of complementary and alternative therapies for horses. Her work has extended into the fields of diet, fitness, injuries and rehabilitation, as well as behavioural work. Saddle Exchange Ltd, with Lucinda McAlpine, have developed a bridle with the horse's comfort in mind, which is designed to fit lots of horses without too much adjustment. The Bridle is made from top quality English leather with brass fittings. It has a wide, raised and padded nose and browband for optimum comfort. Importantly, the nose headpiece passes over the top of the headpiece to reduce pressure from the horse's poll. See Lucinda McAlpine's web page on equinetourism.co.uk
The Lucinda McAlpine Dressage saddle
This superb ReactorPanel saddle has been designed for a more classical riding position. It is made from memal leather which gives a comfortable, close contact feel. The knee blocks are large and adjustable to fine tune the fit to your individual riding needs. This saddle comes with the option of doe skin on the seat for a professional finish.
The Elegance Dressage saddle
The
Elegance has a medium-depth seat with a moderate cantle. Although its design is classical,it incorporates supportive knee rolls and soft knee pads for comfort. Its depth is soundly 'in the middle' of the saddle, so it appeals to a wide range of riders.
ENDURANCE
The Endurance saddles have an extremely comfortable seat and rear-set stirrup bars to permit easy balance when standing in the stirrups. The tapered thigh block provides support during gallops down steep hills. The saddle weighs less than other ReactorPanel saddles, but balanced weights can be added for FEI riders. The saddles have three rings and three staples to attach accessories. The medium length girth straps rest at the bottom of the sweat flap, a design which is comfortable for horses whilst eliminating bulk beneath the leg.
Alexandra Tolstoy
Alexander Tolstoy, the daughter of Count Nikolai Tolstoy, is a travel writer who rode the ancient silk road. Her third epic journey of 2,700 miles from Turkmenistan to Moscow, was ridden between 2004 and 2005, using ReactorPanel saddles and Native Pony bridles. Saddle Exchange Ltd was proud to sponsor her with the necessary riding kit to make her journey as comfortable for her and her horses as possible.
GENERAL PURPOSE, RACING & JUMPING
There are a range of general purpose saddles, VSD straight cut saddles, racing and jumping saddles - all carefully designed to provide maximum comfort and performance for horse and rider.

ORDERING A REACTORPANEL SADDLE |
We understand that a ReactorPanel saddle must be experienced to be appreciated and know how difficult it can be to choose a new saddle. We believe you should only make such an important decision after riding in one of the saddles you are considering.
Due to the nature of the saddles, they can not be supplied by mail order. We come out and fit them to you and your horse. The saddle is paid for at the start of the trial which can last for up to four weeks. If, at the end of the trial, you decide to keep the saddle, you can simply keep it or order a custom one, different colour or different style. If you decide the saddle is not for you, simply return it and a full refund will be given, less the hire charge or an damage. |
Native Pony Saddles |
The Native Pony Saddle Company has evolved to fulfil a definite need in the equestrian world. We could see that pony owners had a limited choice when attempting to purchase a saddle for natives, show ponies, cobs, arabs and other wide horses.
Saddle Exhange Ltd is proud to offer the Native Pony Saddle Company range of beautiful saddles. All are made by master saddlers using top quality English leathers assembled in Walsall.
The Native Pony saddles have been designed with horse and rider in mind. The saddles are made on traditional British standard wooden trees, giving a good bearing surface all the way along the pony's back and have a wide gullet. They are mostly close contact saddles, which fit well and give a neat and minimalist look. The saddles have a wide seat with a narrow twist offering maximum rider comfort. They come in a range of tree sizes and widths, fitting the smallest child to the widest horse and everything in between. All new Native Pony saddles come with a new saddle cover.
Some Examples of Native Pony Saddles...
Bracken
A very neat showing saddle with a minimalist look for the serious showing competitor. This saddle has a very close contact flocked panel to get as close to the horse as possible without compromising comfort for the horse. The saddle is designed to enhance the horse's appearance without hindering the rider.
Fen
The Fen Show Hunter saddle is an elegant show hunter saddle with small knee rolls to support the rider, whether novice or professional.
Glen Mark I
The Glen Mark 1 has a close contact gel foam panel, making it suitable for horses with big shoulders and large action. It has a wide flat seat with the traditional square cantle to give a professional look.
Glen Mark 2
The Glen Mark II has a traditional wool flocked panel for a very close contact fit. This makes it suitable for flat backed and wide withered horses, where problems occur with the saddle lifting at the back and/or not sitting in close.
Mountain & Moorland Mark 1
The Mountain & Moorland Mark 1 has a gel foam panel which offers horse and rider a comfortable ride. The Gel is also low maintenance. It will not require reflocking as it has a longer life span than the traditional flock saddles.
Mountain & Moorland Mark 2
The Mountain & Moorland Mark II has a close contact flocked panel. The saddle comes on a flatter tree making the seat shallower, allowing freedom of movement for the rider. This also suits ponies where saddles slipping up the neck is a problem.
Heathland
The Heathland can come as a straight cut General Purpose or as a Working Hunter, making it very a popular and versatile pony saddle.
