NEWSFLASH!
THE BRITISH HORSE SOCIETY APPOINTS A NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE & PRESIDENT

The Board of The British Horse Society is delighted to announce that Graham Cory, the current Defra 'Official for the Horse', is to be the Society's new Chief Executive.
Graham will take up his appointment in the summer. Chairman of the BHS, Mrs Pat Campbell, said "With his oversight of the horse industry, his political knowledge, and his appreciation of the grass roots rider, Graham Cory has the right mix to ensure The Society continues its healthy period of growth. With almost 60,000 members, The British Horse Society is moving from strength to strength."
Graham Cory will bring to The British Horse Society strong leadership and a vibrant and exciting vision for the future. He is committed to generating a refreshed spirit of cooperation across the equestrian world. The Society campaigns actively in the areas of horse welfare, horse & rider safety, access & rights of way and training & examinations. The Society strives to make horse riding accessible for everyone in the UK, and to ensure levels of teaching and riding establishments are of a high standard.
Graham Cory was appointed as the Defra 'Official for the Horse' in September 2002. One of his key objectives in that post was to look into the horse industry as a whole, and through this he commissioned the recently completed research by The Henley Centre.

Noel Edmunds takes over the new presidency, from the Princess Royal, who has held the post for the past five years.

This Act provides for a statutory code of practice to prevent and control the spread of ragwort in England and Wales. Welfare Issues
A series of new welfare initiatives are being launched by the BHS. There will be a 'new look' magazine called 'BHS Equi-Care' that includes articles on topics such as pasture management, behaviour problems and condition scoring with weight control.

The 'BHS Equi Weight Watchers' campaign will work alongside The Laminitis Trust to help eliminate laminitis in horses and ponies. Horse owners can join up and receive free advice.

Finally, a 'First Time Horse Owner's Pack' is being introduced this year. It provides details on buying a horse, the cost involved, activities and training, as well as shoeing and grooming.

A one-day ESFAC refresher for people who have taken the intitial course and need a biennial refresher to keep their certificates valid. The courses cost £75 for the initial ESFAC and £50 for the refresher.

For further details, locations and start dates, contact The British Horse Society on 01926 707799.
When considering appointing a riding instructor:
A word of advice: Check that your riding instructor holds adequate insurance cover. If they are accredited or registered with British Eventing, the BSJA or the BHS, you can check with that organisation to see if they are currently registered and that their accreditation is up to date.
