Ragwort
Success
Most horse owners are aware of the dangers of ragwort!
Now, there is some welcome news concerning this deadly weed. The
BHS-sponsored Ragwort Control Act has now become law. This Act provides
for a statutory code of practice to prevent and control the spread
of ragwort in England and Wales. For details of the Act and the
draft code of practice, visit: www.defra.gov.uk/rural/horses/topics/ragwort.htm |
Welfare
Issues
A series of new welfare initiatives are being launched
by the BHS. There will be a 'new look' magazine called 'BHS Equi-Care'
that includes articles on topics such as pasture management, behaviour
problems and condition scoring with weight control.
The 'BHS Equi
Weight Watchers' campaign will work alongside The Laminitis Trust
to help eliminate laminitis in horses and ponies. Horse owners can
join up and receive free advice.
Finally, a 'First
Time Horse Owner's Pack' is being introduced this year. It provides
details on buying a horse, the cost involved, activities and training,
as well as shoeing and grooming.
For further
details on any of the new initiatives, log onto www.bhs.org.uk.

When
considering appointing a riding instructor:
A word of advice: Check that your riding instructor
holds adequate insurance cover. If they are accredited or registered
with British Eventing, the BSJA or the BHS, you can check with that
organisation to see if they are currently registered and that their
accreditation is up to date.
