The Rock Inn, Waterrow, nr Taunton, Somerset TA4 2AX

On the Southern Fringes of Exmoor - Pub Dining at its Very Best!

Rock Inn at Waterrow is widely regarded as the best dining experience in the area. Here is what Somerset Life magazine said about us in May 2006:

“The Rock Inn has it all with bags of character, a great atmosphere and excellent food and wine at reasonable prices - we’ll be back ...

We’re on the southern fringe of the Exmoor National Park, one of the most beautiful areas of heather moorland. We are half an hour’s drive from the sea and close to the ever popular walkers’ paradise of the Quantock Hills. Here at Waterrow we are also sitting among the less familiar Brendon Hills.

The family management team - Matt Harvey front of house and Joanna Oldman in the kitchen is a proven winner. Matt trained with Raymond Blanc at Petit Blanc and later the Hotel du Vin chain and Joanna went to the top flight Tante Marie to learn her culinary craft. So you’re in good hands!

For those who don’t want a long drive home after a good bottle of wine with their dinner, or for holiday makers in mid-devon or travellers to other parts, we have eight comfortable, well furnished and characterful rooms here at the Rock Inn, each with its own private bath or shower facilities

The Rock Inn

The Rock Inn is pub dining at its very best - the best in terms of ingredients, cooking and atmosphere. It all adds up to consistency so not only can you be sure of enjoying your next visit to the Rock Inn - you can entertain guests, or recommend, with complete confidence.

The bar at the Rock Inn holds the secret of the pub’s name and you will also find the best kept local beers, superb wines from around the globe and the comfort to enjoy them while you consider your meal. Our ever-changing blackboard menus feature the best and most succulent cuts of Westcountry meat, locally caught fish and scrumptious puddings. Everything served at the Rock Inn is fresh: freshly supplied, prepared and cooked to individual order.

You can eat in the bar, where dogs are welcome, or you can try our non-smoking bistro-style restaurant. The menus are the same for both in terms of standards and choice, it’s just a question of what atmosphere you choose. In the bar there is a big log fire in winter, pretty candles and, of course, The Rock ... the very stuff the building is made of makes a striking feature.

And it’s a proper bar at the Rock Inn so we have a dartboard which doesn’t interfere with the tables and a pool room; the latter is an attractively decorated room at the back of the house with its own jukebox - ideal for fractious kids when all parents want to do is enjoy their meal.

Restaurant
The restaurant at the Rock Inn is very country chic - in the bistro style with tables and chairs in wood, linen napkins, salt and peppercorn grinders and the sort of Riedel glasses that people who enjoy good wines always prefer to encounter. There is an attractive spiral staircase in the corner that goes nowhere in particular and a very warm, intimate atmosphere.

You can eat supremely well at The Rock whatever you choose – and you do have choice. You can eat fresh fillets of lemon sole, haddock and salmon; lamb or beef, outdoor reared pork; free-range chicken and guinea fowl. And you can start with the lightest cheese souffl, pigeon breasts with green salad or the best, most flavoursome soups for many miles around. But leave room for the pudding – Joanna makes here own and they are … fabulous ! But if you want a less costly but equally special party, you can also choose succulent pies, including local Exmoor venison, goats’ cheese and red onion tart

We have something for everyone
Service is pleasant and courteous in both the bar and the restaurant but the latter affords a degree of formality that is not readily achievable in a bar that’s worth the name. Whether you are seeking a degree of intimacy for yourself and family or are entertaining guests, the restaurant here is an ideal fusion of space and ambience.

Accommodation at The Rock Inn

We have eight comfortable and individually furnished and decorated rooms at the Rock Inn, all of them with private bath and shower facilities.

We are not a hotel but a traditional inn and that’s the style you can look forward to. Accommodation is traditional, some rooms with wooden beds, some with iron but all with great country style and all very comfortable - there are even flat screen TVs with a range of digital channels and, where space permits, a comfortable armchair from which to view.

Eight comfortable rooms, each with their own private bath or shower facilities

All rooms are doubles and we also have an option for a twin or with additional single bed for accompanying family. Room 8 even has its own fireplace - and we’ll light it if you’re feeling chilly ! We use all cotton bed linen and the building is centrally heated, of course.

The rooms were all refurbished in the spring of 2006 and baths and shower equipment are all to the highest standards.

Enjoy the Dog Walking
You can easily reach the beaches of the north and south coasts of the Westcountry peninsula from the Rock Inn - they are within a half hour drive at their closest points. The rolling hills of South Devon are below us and the rugged moorland coastline of Exmoor is to the north - Exmoor is on our doorstep. Further west are the wide open spaces of Dartmoor, as different as can be from Cornwall’s Bodmin moor beyond it, and all around are the country houses, gardens and craft centres for which Somerset and Devon are renowned.

This is a land of wide open spaces where there is plenty of room for horses and dogs. The latter are as welcome at the Rock Inn as our guests. Our streams and lakes hold trout and salmon and the local pheasant and partridge shooting is among the best in the land. You can even spot the magnificent red deer of Exmoor within yards of our door. This is paradise for bird and wild animal watchers, wild places that hardly exist further north until you reach the Pennines.
