INSTINCTS Pet Behaviour Therapy

A professional Pet Behaviour Therapy aimed at helping pets with behavioural problems, improving the quality of life for pets and their owners.

Instincts has been helping pets with their owners since July 1995 through referrals from veterinary practices within the South West. Referrals have involved behavioural problems with dogs and cats, an increasing number of horses, with the occasional rabbit, parrot or exotic pet.

Fiona Warstat has eight years experience as a veterinary nurse, working with a small animal practice in Surrey and a mixed practice in Somerset, before specialising in Pet Behaviour Counselling.

Having completed the COAPE (Centre Of Applied Pet Ethology) Advanced course, Fiona regularly attends seminars, meetings and courses, is one of an international network of pet Behaviour Counsellors.

The Need For Pet Behaviour Counselling

A 'difficult' pet, that does not behave as its owner thinks it should, can cause relationship problems within a household. The causes of problems are multiple, sometimes combining a clinical and behavioural origin.

With specialist, experienced help, many of these problems can be overcome, and a difficult pet becomes a close companion.

Canine behavioural problems can be treated - such as:
Aggression
Destructiveness
Nervousness
House soiling
Livestock chasing
Excessive barking
Self mutilation
Hyperactivity/boisterousness
Problems in the car

Feline behavioural problems can also be treated - such as:
House soiling
Indoor spraying
Aggression
Nervousness
Pica
Self mutilation

Pet Behaviour Counselling Techniques

There is no standard therapy, each case is different, but working closely with the animal, their owner and their veterinary surgeon enables an individual behavioural modification programme to be structured.

Instincts has facilities for rehabilitating dogs, running groups which have proved beneficial for many unsociable problems. Instincts works within the private home or welfare organisation.

Fiona is often asked to attend meetings and give lectures of public interest, enabling pet owners to benefit from her ever increasing knowledge of animal behaviour.

Puppy classes at veterinary surgeries, one-day workshops and individual training are all offered, often incorporating colleagues within the field of animal behaviour.

'I have known and worked with Fiona professionally for over nine years. Fiona has attended many COAPE courses run by myself and my colleagues and actively pursues her continuing professional development to expand her knowledge in the field of animal behaviour therapy. I am very happy to recommend her services to veterinary practices for help with their pet behaviour referrals.'
Peter Neville DHc BSc (Hons). Director COAPE

Instincts' Approach

Working within the client's and animal's home enables both to remain relaxed as the consultation takes form.

As with most holistic approaches, behaviour therapy looks at the animal as a whole, taking into account the personality, constitution and environmental influences of the problem to be addressed.

Most importantly, the 'jigsaw' starts with a complete clinical profile, provided by the client's veterinary surgeon.

Health affects behaviour, and unless possible clinical signs can be recognised, important clues may be overlooked.

What the Vets Think...

'When consulting a client with a pet behavioural problem, 'Instincts' is the first name I reach for. Fiona has provided our practice with four years reliable and professional service, producing good results and contented owners.'
Donald Ellicott BVMS, MRCVS, Cullompton, Devon

'Fiona Warstat has provided us with a reliable and professional service through her 'Instincts' Pet Behaviour Therapy for approximately eight years now. We have found her to be successful with her in-depth analyses and home visits where we have often despaired with problem dogs and cats. I can recommend 'Instincts' to fellow veterinary surgeons in practice.'
Simon White BVSc, MRCVS, White Lodge Veterinary Clinic, Minehead, Somerset

'Fiona is pleasant and efficient, going to great lengths when consulting clients reffered with behavioural problems. There is always a satisfactory outcome; the degree depending on client compliance.'
Judy Waterow MRCVS Widcombe Veterinary Surgery, Bath, Avon

Insurance
Instincts is able to accept referrals from vets; the cost incurred by the clients in such cases are covered by most pet insurance policies. Instincts is covered by public liability and professional indemnity insurance.
