| Horse Riding Holidays at Viva Iberica |
Viva Iberica riding holidays are run by Richard and Sue Lust, who are well known for running the famous Yeguada Iberica purebred Spanish horse stud (which relocated from the UK to Spain in 2003).
Richard and Sue have extensive, long term experience of training, riding and driving Spanish horses (see more in the Stud section below) and are delighted to welcome you to their facility in Spain to experience and share their enthusiasm for the purebred Spanish horse.
At Viva Iberica, you can plan the horse riding holiday to suit you - whether it is riding the Purebred Spanish (Andalusian) & Lusitano ‘Schoolmasters’ in the spectacular surrounding countryside; and/or improving your understanding and technique with instruction in Classical Dressage, High School (intermediate to advanced), long reining, work in hand, Doma Vaquera and carriage driving.
You can explore ancient tracks, pine woods, time-worn arroyos, vineyards, olive, almond, apricot groves, spectacular scenery and breathtaking views to the wide horizon. There are no roads, no barriers and no fences. Accommodation is arranged in good quality, modern hotels in the market town of Hellin, with en-suite & air-conditioned rooms, just 12 minutes from the Riding Centre. Transfers from the airports are included.
After riding, there is plenty to do - or not. You can relax at the riding centre with its spectacular views over the countryside, enjoy the sun (and shade!) on our terraces with sun loungers and bar - and if you are looking for lively evenings, the village or the local town of Hellin (where your hotels are situated) provide this in plenty, with street cafes, bars, nightclubs and entertainment into the early hours.
Plan Your Perfect Riding Holiday
You can choose from a wide range of riding and holiday options including:
1)
All day or half day trail riding or riding tuition in the international size arena - or a combination of both.
2) Intensive Classical Riding courses, including outriding if you wish.
3) Tours of the region and the unspoilt beauty of Southern Castilla La Mancha - visit castles, lakes, bull ranches and other studs - and wine routes.
. . . or a combination of the above to suit you - and there is plenty to do for non-riders!

| Horse Riding & Classical Riding Tuition at Viva Iberica |
| Classical Riding Tuition - Intensive Riding Courses |
|
Riding tuition in the school. Instruction is given on a one-to-one basis, and as attention is given to the rider through individual instruction, these holidays are limited to a maximum of 4 persons.
Viva Iberica's aim is to ensure all students achieve the clearest understanding of Classical methods. Lessons are tailored according to interests and needs, taking the objects of each rider into account. Age or standard is unimportant but these courses do not suit beginners. Naturally, riders who already have some experience and a reasonable riding ability can benefit the most. Some of the more advanced horses are extremely sensitive and responsive, enabling the rider to refine the use of their position, seat and aids, feeling an instant response from the horse, as well as cadence, collection, freedom of movement and lateral work. These horses are exceptional teachers!
The idea is for guests to have two individual lessons per day. They are also welcome to watch horse training sessions and there is a good selection of books and videos in the on-site tack shop. |
| Horse Riding in the Spanish Countryside |
All Day Trail Riding at Viva Iberica is aimed at the intermediate or experienced rider. Riders need to be able to control their horses outside at all paces and for the enjoyment of the rest of the riders, this option is not suitable for beginners or children of less than 12 years.
|
Each day the ride follows a different route (with three to five hours in the saddle), starting from the centre, stopping for lunch either at a country bar/restaurant or for a picnic out in the country. You will ride on ancient tracks through spectacular scenery, often teeming with butterflies and bird life (look out for eagles, hoopoes, bee-eaters) and rich in wildflowers during the spring, through pine woods, time-worn arroyos, through vineyards, olive, almond and apricot groves and from the tops of our small mountains enjoy huge views to the wide horizon. No roads, no barriers, no fences.
Half day Riding in the Country + half day Riding in the School - This option may be enjoyed by novice to experienced riders, but is not suitable for beginners. Depending on the time of year, you may ride in the country during the mornings, working in the school in the afternoons, or vice versa. Each day the ride (two to three hours in the saddle ) follows a different route, starting from the centre in the morning, stopping for lunch either at a country bar/restaurant or for a picnic out in the country.
Have you wondered what is meant by Natural Horsemanship, Horse Whisperer or Horse Communicator?
At Viva Iberica, we don't call ourselves whisperers or communicators, but we believe we have a natural approach to horses; consider our 15 or so main riding stallions quietly working together in the school, working willingly in hand, riding out with our mares or when Richard sometimes works a group of mares (lote de yeguas, or 'cobra') while riding one of our stallions. You never hear raised
voices or see horses pulled or pushed around at our centre, so we do communicate quietly.
The Team at Viva Iberica
Sue Lust - Sue has years of experience with the Spanish horse, training, riding and teaching. She has an affinity with nervous and less experienced riders, being able to convey instructions and assistance in a way that is appreciated and easily understood. She has worked as a judge of the Spanish horse after intensive training in Spain and worked on the Committee of the British Society for the Purebred Spanish Horse (BAPSH), until she left the UK to relocate in Spain. Sue has competed successfully, in both saddles, and attracted many followers to the Spanish horse through exhibition work with her PRE stallion Malabar. Sue has also gained success at National level in driving competitions with Yeguada Iberica's PRE stallions.
Richard Lust - Richard is an official delegate for the Asociación Nacional de Doma Vaquera (Spanish National Doma Vaquera Association) and founded the first Doma Vaquera Association in the UK, being the only officially recognised Doma Vaquera instructor when living in England. Richard assisted with the formulation of the European Working Equitation regulations when this was a ‘new’ sport and has taken part in Doma Vaquera, acoso y derribo and performed riding, handling and driving displays for many years, including Alta Escuela, ridden, in hand and on the long rein. Richard is an advocate of classical riding methods, is included in the CRC Trainers Directory and has worked in support of the Classical Riding Club in the UK. With Sue, his wife, Richard produced a driven pair of stallions that achieved 2nd place at Royal Windsor.
Juan Miguel (Juanmi) - Juan Miguel, who was born near the centre, in the village of Tobarra, has been riding since he was able to walk. He started his training under his father, who is an accomplished rider, professional trainer, a driver of singles to teams of eight stallions and the manager/trainer of a prestigious PRE stud nearby. Juan Miguel is an exceptionally kind rider and gets the best from the horses he rides, softly and without fuss, especially when starting off younger horses. This attitude is carried through his teaching, where he is very much appreciated by younger or nervous riders.
Jacqueline Barry BHSAI - Jacqueline has been teaching for 21 years, 17 in the UK and the last 4 years in Spain. She has competed successfully in many disciplines, with special success in bringing on and riding jumping horses. |
| The Yeguada Stud - Spanish Stud |
Established in 1988, near Javea in Eastern Spain, Yeguada Iberica Stud became the UK’s largest Purebred Spanish Horse (Andalusian) stud until it relocated back to Spain in 2003.
Owners Richard and Sue Lust bred the UK’s first ever Purebred Spanish Horse to be awarded ‘Calificado’ grading status (a stallion of exceptional quality and working at their riding centre in Spain today). While in the UK, Yeguada Iberica was awarded the Mejor Ganaderia (National Best Stud / Best Breeder Purebred Spanish Horses) trophy by the Jefatura de Cria Caballar (FESCCR), who hold the Spanish State Studbook (in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003) and their stallion Granero IV was the National Progeny Champion every year he was in the UK, from 1998 to 2003.
Caballos de Pura Raza Español
Yeguda Iberica has continued to develop two distinct lines from its breeding programme. These are Grey and Dun horses from ancient Bocado (Terry) lines and Bay and Chestnut horses from Yeguada Militar (Military stud) lines. The emphasis is on functional horses with excellent movement and work moral. Through international competition, the horses of Yeguada Iberica have many times proven to be among the very best, with a long line of National Champions in ridden, movement and morphological events.
The Stud's founder stallions:
Granero IV - predominantly Bocado (Terry) . National Progeny Champion 1998 - 2003. PRE UK Performance Champion 2002 & 2003.Included in the L.I.M.P.R.E. Book of Merits.
Malabar - predominantly Yeguada Militar. Supreme National Movement Champion UK, twice reserve Ridden Champion, multiple National Stallion Champion. Son of Spanish National Supreme Champion 'Orfebre'.
Kan VIII - UK Performance Champion for breeding PRE partbreds 2001, 2002 & 2003. Included in the L.I.M.P.R.E. Book of Merits. Son of Spanish National Supreme Champion 'Orfebre'
Mejicano XXXIX - Supreme National UK PRE Champion (joint), Supreme National Movement Champion
Octavio III - Confirmed by Jefatura de Cria Caballar (FESCCR) as the highest graded PRE in Eastern Spain (either sex) in the last 20 years and the first UK bred Purebred Spanish Horse to pass Calificado grading.
Enthusiasts throughout the world have seen Yeguada Iberica's horses in Spanish promotional material for the PRE, without realising the horses used are from Yeguada Iberica. Malabar is one of the most photographed examples of the PRE; the definitive example for the PRE in books of horse breeds of the world, in Juan Llamas's book 'This is the Spanish Horse' and on posters and publicity material all over Spain.
