Kate Tapley Horse Treks Ltd, PO Box 13543 Armagh, Christchurch, New Zealand

Experience the breathtaking beauty of New Zealand from horseback

We teach and apply the principles of natural horsemanship while offering short treks and horse riding holidays for up to weeks on end through the beautiful New Zealand countryside near Christchurch, and North Canterbury. The emphasis is on safe, enjoyable riding and good horsemanship, with sessions before riding out to enhance your 'partnership' with your horse - using the horse's natural language - and including helpful riding hints. This natural horsemanship approach makes your trek safer, more rewarding and fun.

Kate Tapley Horse Treks Ltd...

Trekking with Kate Tapley
Treks are suitable for adults, young people and children with all levels of experience Rides range from one hour to all day - with a wealth of riding experiences throughout both operations. Trained trek guides will accompany you on your trek. Riders are provided with helmets, chaps, gloves, long riding coats, extra warm clothing and some footwear for their rides.

Our groups consist of one to six riders. Digital photo service lunch, cups of tea and coffee are offered on most rides. You may arrange your own personal trek guide for an exclusive ride.

Mt Lyford Horse Treks and Sherwood Lodge have combined to offer Luxury Horse Treks right through to Hanmer Springs (3-6 days.) staying over at Sherwood Lodge on the way.

Riding the Trails
Local land owners enable riders to have access to thousands of acres for horse trekking. Trails of varying length have been carefully developed, to offer varying degrees of difficulty - according to riding ability - and a wide range of beautiful scenery both coastal at Otahuna and in the mountains at Mt Lyford.

What to Bring and Handy Riding Hints

Bring study footwear preferably with a heel, comfortable long trousers or jodpurs, (pantyhose or bike shorts worn under your trousers can prevent rub) wet weather gear and an extra water bottle.
Kate advises, "Remember we are either on the East Coast or in the mountains and reasonably close to the main divide. The weather can turn in a moment, and you can get much colder riding a horse than when you are walking on foot. We provide some warm gear, and all the staff along with me are here to make your ride everything you hoped for."

Non-Riding Activities
Mt. Lyford-In the winter skiing and snow boarding are popular. There are walks, 6 golf courses within an hour, 4 WDriving and fishing all year round. Otahuna, 20 minutes from Chch, has the most activities of any major N.Z city from skiing to sea sports, and entertainment.

Natural Horsemanship - 'Partnering Up' with your horse
Partnering Up
Before each ride begins Kate Tapley offers a session on helpful riding hints and how to "partner up" with your horse using the horse’s natural language. Allow up to one hour in addition to the riding time.

Natural horsemanship makes your trek safer and more fun.

Team Building
Training in leadership and team building is available to businesses and groups, using our partnering up theme. Events are organised with you to suit your needs.

Natural Horsemanship

"Natural" simply means using the horses own natural language (equus) to communicate with your horse. It is a style of being around horses that is very old, and widely used throughout the world, particularly by indigenous peoples."

Natural Horsemanship
has more recently been brought to the public eye throughout the Western World by the successful marketing of Natural Horsemanship by Horseman such as Monty Roberts, and Pat Parelli whose clinics and demonstrations have been very popular in making Natural Horsemanship accessible to everyone wanting to learn more. 'Horsemanship' is a term used to describe the art of relating to your horse.

Partnering up is a term used to describe the process, techniques and ways of being with your horse to maximise cooperation, trust, and connection between you and your horse. Both horses and humans have high levels of ingredients required for full and sensitive connection.

It becomes deeply satisfying to expand on these qualities, and watch how "at one" you can become with your huge prey animal.

Cathy Johns

CASE STUDY
In this picture of Cathy with Angel you can see the high level of cooperation, and trust developing between them. Angel is willingly, and respectfully coming up to Cathy with her head down, exposing her vulnerable neck with its vital blood vessels to cathy in a submissive quiet manner.
Cathy has been "playing games" with Angel before we introduce her to her trekker for this ride we are preparing for.
The "games we play with our horses emulate the games they play with each other naturally while in their herd together. They are played to establish dominance, gain respect, and cooperation between horses, so we play them with our horses for the same reasons.
Our aim is to include ourselves in the horse's world with ourselves above them in the pecking order in a way that makes the horse want to be part of our herd, just like Angel is doing with Cathy. In addition to this the Games encourage the horse to use the left side of their brain where they can think, let go of their defences, and learn new things. This is the best head space to encourage the horse into while you are doing anything with your horse.

The Partnering Up Sessions: Following a short talk on how horses think we introduce you to your horse for your ride. Once mounted from the mounting block you have the opportunity to become acquainted in the "Round Pen". The round pen is 50' in diameter and it is the safest space you work in with a horse. It is a space with just the right dimensions to make a horse think about what he/she is doing.

Here we see some trekkers doing this, while Kate explains ways of riding, which helps the horse want to understand and follow the human's lead. This is Simon and Sara on Angel and Freya. Once everyone feels confident enough with the partnership they have with their horse we ride out on our ride in an order suitable for the horses and riders, so all the friends are together.

We ride as a group at the pace of the most vulnerable horse or rider. This can vary from moment to moment, and is constantly assessed by your guide. Partnering up with your horse is age and experience independent. We have seen small children gain cooperation from huge horses, and new riders inspire confidence in a shy horse.

On return we help you dismount, and say farewell to your horse. Don't forget to sign our visitor's book, take your article on How Horses Think and a brochure away with you.
