The Riding Centre at Centro Ippico Della Berardenga

The Riding Centre of the Berardenga is recognised by the National Riding Authority (FISE). it is situated in Chianti at the mid point between Siena, Arezzo and Florence. The area is rich in culture, history and heritage and is ideal for horse riding with beautiful, meandering landscapes.

The rides are varied and riders will discover castles, abbeys, old Etruscan settlements and beautiful Tuscan country houses (poderi) in the heart of our lovely Tuscan countryside.

The Riding Centre (English riding) is run by Donatella Zambon, an ex-teacher of literature, and her husband, Sadio Chellini. Donatella has worked full time for 18 years with horses and is well qualified, the most recent being the prestigious "Guida federale". Donatella has taught hundreds of riders, both beginners and advanced. She chooses and prepares her horses personally - once trained they are never sold - and great care is taken to ensure they are happy in their environment. There is a particular interest on dressage and training the centre and guests often appreciate the opportunity to improve their riding as well as enjoying the beautiful outriding.

Riding Week Holidays - week long riding holidays are available for adult visitors, as well as special childrens riding programmes. Riding out on the trails through the countryside can be combined with lessons and training. Both English and Italian is spoken at the centre. Donatella and Sadio personally take care of the riding programme.

The Best Time to Ride in Chianti - The best time to ride in the Chianti area are spring and autumn, April until 15 of June and 15 of September until end of October, when the average temperature is between 18 and 28 degrees. Sprin is an explosion of flowers and birds and in autumn, you can roll up your sleeves and get involved at the grape harvest, and enjoy the stunning autumn colours as the landscape changes.

Lessons and Training - Lessons are organised according to level: beginner, intermediate, expert and advanced. Beginners start gradually in groups of max. 3 pupils, with steady and well schooled horses.
More advanced riders can improve their technique both on the flat and over low jumps, and have individual lessons.

Hiking - These rides are for more experienced riders and last from one to three hours, following varying itineraries and routes. Donatella and Sadio personally lead the rides.

Trekking - Donatella and Sadio lead several wonderful long distance treks each year for which riding experience and fitness are required. The treks take place mainly in spring and autumn, when the weather is cooler.

The Centre was recommended by the international all-round rider Ian Stark in Horse & Hound in 2000.

Tuscany Farmhouse Accommodation at Centro Ippico Della Berardenga

The traditional Tuscan Farmhouse accommodation at the Centre offers four bedrooms with private bathroom and there is a also a self-contained apartment in a converted barn, for two people.

Surrounded by meadows and woods with a view of a mediaeval castle, the farm is in the nowadays rare position to offer its guests the silence of nature, the sound of birdsong, the neighing of horses, the river flowing and sometimes Donatella 'encouraging' her pupils!

The buildings have recently been renovated but without altering their original form. Guests can relax in the large living room with an open fireplace, or the club house. Our desire was to create a harmonious setting in 600 square metres, for a limited number of guests who are looking to stay in a friendly but, at the same time, discreet environment.

We are also a certified organic farm and we try to respect the environment in the way we run our farm holiday accommodation. The stables are only 100 metres from the house so guests can immerse themselves with the horses as much as they wish.

Food, drink and entertainment - The position of the farm make it an ideal base for cycling and hiking, and for those who wish to mix cultural tourism with outdoor pursuits. We offer bed and breakfast and the kitchen is at the guests disposal. There are also plenty of local restaurants and trattorias. Castelnuovo Berardenga town council organises cultural and social activities in the area and there are two well-known spa swimming pools ten minutes away.

Pets - We love animals and have a lot, so we are unable to accept dogs or other pets, but if you are looking for such accommodation there are two neighbouring farms which offer two apartments where it is possible to take animals. Contact us for further information.

Location - The farmstead is situated about 10km from Castelnuovo Berardenga, 23km from Siena, 40km from Arezzo, 60km from Florence and 30km from the A1 motorway "Autostrada del Sole". The nearest railway stations are Siena and Montevarchi.

The Horses

As we said we like our horses to be happy, therefore they work both in the school and in the countryside, but they spend some hours every day in the fields. Once horses join the centre they are never sold and periodically they are re-trained and worked with the lunge by our instructors. We have 15 horses.

We choose our horses not according to their breed but by looking at their attitude to work in the flat and in the countryside. they must have good mental balance so they can change riders easily. Horses are friendly and easy to handle. For this reason in our stables you will find very different breeds: thoroughbred, warm blood, Murgesi, Arab blood, Holsteiner etc.
