Discover the breathtaking natural beauty, culture, volcanic countryside and beaches of Iceland from the back of the unique Icelandic horse, with its special gait tölt. Íshestar Riding Tours has been a leading, fully licensed tour operator for almost 30 years and offers a series of exhilarating horse riding experiences - from one day rides to multi-day treks with overnight accommodation.

The Riding

Conveniently situated, just a 15 minute drive from Reykjavík, Ishestar Riding Tours are the perfect - and traditional - way to see the stunning Icelandic countryside.

The Ishestar Riding Centre offers unique facilities in beautiful surroundings just outside the town of Hafnarfjörður - and provides endless opportunities for riding, hiking and other outdoor activities. All levels of riders are welcomed and the Íshestar staff takes pride in finding horses that suit every customer's needs, with the emphasis on safety. Introductory lessons are available for completely novice riders, and the Icelandic horses are known for their kind and placid temperaments. Advanced riders can enjoy the more exhilarating and challenging trail rides and experience the Icelandic horses unique gait tölt!

There is also plenty to do for non-horsey friends and family - including walks in the bushy lava fields or relaxing in the Jósalir Restaurant!

Ride at the pace you want to...
At Íshestar the emphasis is on the needs and wishes of every individual. The group is gathered at the beginning of the ride while the guides make sure that everyone feels secure knowing how to handle their horses. Then the group is divided into smaller groups for those who wish to ride at a faster pace and others who prefer to go slower.

Icelandic Countryside Horse Riding Tours & Highland Horse Riding Tours at Ishestar
Countryside Horse Riding Tours
Ishestar's tours in the countryside lead through fertile farmlands, taking in the many special highlights in the landscape. On the popular Golden Circle you will ride to the Geysir hot spring area and Gullfoss Waterfall. The tour Trail of Hope in the North offers a great variety of riding tracks and a bus tour through the central highlands. Four days riding on the beach of Snæfellsnes is an adventure not to be missed! The wonders around Lake Mývatn can be explored on the Northern Panorama tour . If you can only spend a few days riding an Icelandic horse, Ishestar's two to four day riding tours make the most of your time. In September and October you can participate in the rounding up of sheep and horses.

Highland Horse Riding Tours
These multi-day highland rides lead into spectacular areas and give you a real flavour of the dramatic Icelandic scenery. Volcanic activities have shaped the landscape you visit on the Northern Exposure ride. The sandy beaches at Snæfellsnes in the West are the perfect place to experience the Icelandic horses special gait tölt. You can follow the historic trail Kjölur which Icelanders used for centuries when travelling across the central highland. On the Egilsstaðir ride in the East, you will experience untouched nature, rarely to be found anywhere else. Multi-coloured mountains will fascinate on the Landmannalaugar tour in the South.

Accommodation
For the Countryside Tours, all accommodation is in made up beds. On the Highland Tours, the accommodation is traditional and simple, in mountain cabins and community centres in sleeping bags. The Snæfellsnes ride offers accommodation in made up beds for all nights of the tour except two. On The Diamond Circle tour and our Eastern Symphony tour, Ishestar is able to combine an adventurous highland ride with accommodation in beds in double rooms throughout the tour.

The Riding Centre

Ishestar Riding Centre welcomes individuals, families and all kinds of groups who want to enjoy themselves outdoors. The facilities offer people an easy way to enjoy the Icelandic horses and the experienced staff ensure the safety of all guests.

Riding lessons
There are numerous possibilities to train your riding skills at Íshestar. You can find programmes that suit children, adults, beginners or advanced riders. Íshestar also offers training for the handicapped, hippo therapy and short courses for school groups. Riding for the disabled is a course where an educated instructor teaches basic riding skills. Christina Finke is in charge of the hippo therapy, an educated physical therapist specialized in hippo therapy and the treatment of MS. For school groups Íshestar offers a half day course, where the Icelandic horse is introduced. The children work on different assignments and go on a short riding tour.

Íshestar Riding Tours has been a fully licensed and fully insured tour operator for almost 30 years. Íshestar's goal is to enhance sustainable development of nature, society, culture and the economy. Íshestar is a member of Green Globe and the company received the Environmental Award in 2001 from the Icelandic Tourist Board.

The Icelandic Horses
The history of the Icelandic Horse can be traced right back to the settlement of the country in the late 9th century. The breed has remained pure for over a thousand years and today there is only one breed of horse in Iceland – The Icelandic Horse.

The Icelandic Horse has played a key role in the life of Icelanders from the beginning and the horse was highly regarded and renowned in Norse mythology. For centuries the horse was the only means of transportation in Iceland as well as being the most important working animal in the days before machinery. Therefore the horse was called “the most useful servant”. When the first automobile arrived in Iceland in 1940 the horse rapidly became redundant. Iceland’s first horse breeding association was formed the same year the automobile arrived, but up until that time horses had mainly been bred with strength and stamina in mind, rather than riding abilities or gaits.

Today, there are close to 80,000 horses in Iceland which is an incredible number for a nation that counts 300,000 people. The horse is used for pleasure riding, travelling and competition purposes and it still plays a practical role in the annual sheep and horse round-ups where farmers use horses to round up sheep and horses in the highlands.
