The Ultimate Tailor Made Horse Riding Safari in Africa |
| Horse Safari Kenya |
Horse Safari Botswana |
|
Outposts Ltd is a small adventure travel company that offers a tailor made service to our clients. We love to share those special locations and interesting people that embody the real spirit of Africa, organizing personalised African holidays. From “Mild to Wild”, Outposts can put together exciting itineraries, including riding safaris for all in South Africa, Botswana and Kenya.

We favour the more remote, unusual, friendly locations, which embody real Africa and cater for smaller numbers of guests. We put a great deal of effort into your holiday because word of mouth is our best advertisement. For full details of our safaris and a host of other holiday suggestions please visit www.outposts.co.uk
Planning a Horse Riding Safari
Being riders ourselves we can help you choose the right riding safari for you. Combine beautiful, wild locations with lovely horses and most importantly, expert guides and you have a truly African riding experience. The riding safaris we offer vary; from riding daily into wild country from a comfortable lodge to a truly mobile tented safari deep in the African Bush. From the Okavango Delta’s waterways to the rolling plains of the Mara, from the St Lucia Wetlands to the rich undergrowth in Songimvelo, South Africa. There are choices that suit you and our aim is to help you choose. From luxury to comfortable, characterful to camping under the stars, we can suggest the perfect itinerary for you. Using our personal knowledge, let us make every second of your time in Africa count.
What we look for
Beautiful locations that fill the soul and guides who teach with a passion and depth of knowledge. Unspoilt places that delve into the history and culture of the area and out of the way places which are worth getting to just for the ambiance. Fair trade and eco friendly locations which are great for you and great for the locals. Unstuffy, humorous hosts who treat their guests like friends, good food, untouristy places, dirt roads and the lived-in look. The unusual and artistic. Big baths, powerful showers, imaginative breakfasts, open fires.

| Horse Riding Safari in Kenya - Riding Wild at Borana |
Being riders ourselves we have great pleasure in recommending the very best sort of riding safari in Kenya. The safari is run by a well established farming family, situated in a stunning part of wild country nestled under Mt Kenya’s magnificent, snow covered peaks.
Your hosts combine care, hospitality and knowledge of the area with marvelous food, friendly good humour and true enthusiasm, which not only widens the waistband but warms the heart.
The horses are home bred polo pony types or Thoroughbred X Ethiopian pony and are ridden in either English saddles (with sheepskin saddle savers) or Australian trekking saddles. They are very accommodating and well behaved without being remotely boring. Light to ride and sure footed, both competent and less able riders will enjoy them.
All our holidays are designed around your requirements but here are some ideas:
Eight Nights in the Country
This riding safari begins by staying at the extremely comfortable Borana Lodge then moves daily between unique eco lodges such as Tassia and Il'Ngwesi and safari tents. Riding deep into remote Africa where the game really is wild and the view is big enough to fill the soul. Each day involves an early start and a long ride through diverse country which changes daily. There is ample opportunity to stop and each nights stay has a pool or river in which to cool off. The week is designed to be active and restful and we can add on further non riding days and locations if required.
Three Day Mountain Riding
This ride is lovely and very different. It suits families or groups of very good friends, who are happy to "rough it" without ensuite bathrooms and waitress service for a few days. Riding up towards Mt Kenya to 10,500 feet through church like forests, where the air is clear and sharp and the rolling hills remind you of Scotland. For those who appreciate rustic charm, stunning views, tranquility and fishing, this is a must. You will stay in 2 authentic log cabins with bunk beds, piping hot water, but no electricity. 2 days of peace and quiet here are extremely restorative.

| Testimonial - The Outposts Team put a Horse Riding Safari in Kenya to the Test... |
Outposts Ltd have just taken 7 people as guinea pigs to ride in Kenya and what a success it was.
“Better than expected.” “The best holiday I have ever had, loved it all.” “A very good mix of riding and rest.” “Loved the locations, particularly Tassia.”
Staying with 3rd generation Kenya friends who run riding safaris, everything went better than could be hoped for. The group were huge fun and with 8 there is enough dilution for people to “do their own thing.” The accommodation, comfortable, unusual, characterful, varied and in truly outstandingly beautiful locations have to be seen to be appreciated. The food, care and hospitality, coupled with friendly good humour and true enthusiasm and knowledge of Kenya from our hosts, not only widened the waistband but warmed the heart. |

The ponies were all very accommodating and well behaved without being remotely boring. Light to ride and sure footed, even our less able riders managed well. The beauty of this privately, family owned area in Kenya, nestled under Mt Kenya’s magnificent, cloudless and snow covered (for us) peaks, is that one can be adaptable and suit all riders. This safari took us deep into untouristy Africa where the game really is wild and the view big enough to fill the soul. Each day involved an early start and a long ride through diverse country which changed daily. We rode as hard and fast as our weakest rider cold manage but mostly just ambled along enjoying “being” in Africa with its sounds and smells and wonderful feel. No pressure- heaven.
The 2 weeks were designed to active and restful. Each location had a pool or a river to bathe in; one could do bush walks or just read a book. 3 days riding and one day off with a game drive to Lewa at the end where we saw all the big 5 in 4 hours! I have not seen a leopard for 26 years and this was in truly wild country. How exciting. We even rode up the mountain to 10,500 feet for real contrast. For those who do not mind rustic charm and like views, peace and fishing, this is a must. We stayed in 2 Hansel and Gretel log cabins, caught huge trout and laughed a great deal. This ride is not for those who require ensuite bathrooms and waitress service but for a family or a “friendly” group, it is lovely and very different.
We can safely say we have test driven this area and it gets a 10 star rating. We specialise in taking groups who are competent riders if you want to go on a real wilderness riding safari. For those with less ability or with some members who are not too good in the saddle do not despair. We do day rides and balance what we do and where we go to the group’s ability. The game is there coupled with the space and the wonderful hospitality so join us for a truly once in a life time holiday. |
| Horse Riding Safari in Botswana - A Truly African Riding Experience in the Okavango Delta |
Botswana consists of a vast inland delta, one of Southern Africa's most enigmatic river systems which lie like an emerald jewel on the edge of the great Kalahari Desert.
It is an astonishing maze of papyrus lined waterways, meadows and woodland rich in birdlife and game and one of the best and most exciting ways to venture further into the delta and get closer to the wildlife is on horseback. When guided by those who have many years experience and love of the country, who know their horses, you will find it hard to get closer nature's marvels in a more wonderful wilderness than this.
For a really personalised and truly African riding experience then we recommend going with PJ and Barney in the Okavango Delta.
Cantering alongside the elegant motion of a giraffe is an experience you will never forget and the only sounds you will hear, as the wind soughs though the long grass and rattles the palms, are the fish eagle’s haunting cry, the splash of a disappearing crocodile and the drumming of hooves.
There is nothing quite like it at the end of a long day in the saddle, sitting round the camp fire as the blood red sun drops into the black of night, the hyena'' whoop-de-whoop and the lion's roars. This is as close to nature as you will ever get. Leave your “mod cons” behind and take on the flow of life in a part of Africa that is still wild and beautiful. This is an experience for riders and you are truly “off the beaten track.”
Your Hosts Barney and PJ are experienced and inspired guides who will share with you an intimate knowledge of the Okavango and its wildlife which comes from living and working there for over twenty years
The Horses Full and part Thoroughbred, Pure Arab, Anglo Arab, American Saddle Bred. Between 14 and 17 hands. Well-schooled, responsive and even temperament. There is a wide range of horses (over 50 ) suitable for the competition rider to a steady hack. Every effort is made to match horse and rider.
The Riding The Okavango Delta has been described as a water meadow. Palm islands, grassy flood plains, mopane forests and clear streams. Highest water is normally between May to September. Many of the flood plains are full at this time and the horses wade through from island to island. The going is normally quite good and firm along the edges of the islands allowing the ride to move on at a trot and canter.
