DUNSTER COUNTRY FAIR

The Dunster Country Fair is now in its 30th year, having started out as a Donkey Derby.

Dunster Country Fair aims to promote country sports and the country way of life by bringing together horses, hounds and dogs of every description, a fine range of country pursuits and activities, and amusements for young and old alike.

Dunster Country Fair is organised by a committee drawn from the two local hunts, the West Somerset Hunt and the Minehead Harriers, and is generously sponsored by local businesses.

The Fair is also an important show for the Exmoor Pony Society and Fell Pony Society, so come along and have a great family day out!

HOUND SHOW
Organiser: Mr Andrew Turner, 4 Barnes Cottages, Cutcombe, Minehead, Somerset TA24 7AW Tel: 01643 841831
The hound show at Dunster Country Fair gives local hunts the opportunity to compete against each other in the ring and show off their hounds to the general public. The hounds have been carefully bred over hundreds of years to hunt their specific quarry, whether it be fox, deer, hare or mink. There are only 3 packs of staghounds in the country, all based here in the south west. It is the presence of the stag hunts that ensures the survival of the only significant and truly wild red deer herds left in England. Staghounds and foxhounds are large hounds built for speed and stamina. The harrier is smaller and lighter and was originally bred to hunt hares, although most packs of harriers nowadays hunt foxes as well or exclusively. The beagle is the smallest hound on show here and they generally hunt hares. The minkhound is descended from the otter hound, and was used to hunt the mink which have become established in the wild having been released originally from mink farms. Mink are vicious predators and often devastate the local populations of native species such as the water vole and ground nesting birds. Minkhounds hunted along river banks during the summer months to keep the mink population under control.
Five couple class
This is a competition not often seen, in which each huntsman will have 5 couple of hounds in the ring and will demonstrate their paces, conformation, obedience and responsiveness to the judges.
