people4ponies - 'The Wild Pony Experience' at Horseford Farm

people4ponies is an organisation that is taming and training wild ponies using non-confrontational body language methods. Every time a pony is approached and worked, this method confirms to him that he need not fear the handler. An adult wild pony that has suffered some trauma at the hand of man as a foal will distance himself as far as possible from a human and, if cornered, may well try to defend himself. To see such a pony coming toward his handler, of his own accord, after only a few days work is miraculous. But...it's not magic...anybody can do it! Just learn the language and then practice.

Paul & Cilla King, who work with the ponies, want to share their experiences and knowledge with others who may be interested. What they are offering at Horseford Farm makes learning the language of the horse available to all. They invite you to visit free of charge - or enjoy the peace and quiet of rural Devon with a stay in their traditional farmhouse bed and breakfast - and enjoy learning about the ponies.

This is a unique opportunity to study and learn from wild and/or traumatised ponies; to observe non-confrontational body language handling methods; to join in activities such as round pen work, round ups, loose loading, pony herding techniques, stable management and the introduction of ponies to riding, driving and harness work. It is an almost essential experience for anyone who is studying non-traditional horse handling methods.

How to take part in people4ponies activities:You can simply visit Paul and Cilla at Horseford Farm; you can stay at Horseford Farm B&B and watch and take part in pony activities; you can join in the regular pony-orientated social and community events - or you can give a pony a home...

New for 2006! Pony Sponsorship Scheme
Our PONY SPONSORSHIP SCHEME has been set up for the benefit of a few ponies that are so severely traumatised that they are unlikely to be offered a home. Sponsorship costs just £2.50 per month. Please telephone Cilla and Paul King on 01884 860252 or email ceekay@onetel.com for full details.
people4ponies

The people4ponies project was born in 2003 out of a need to address the problem of unwanted and valueless ponies and to help re-vitalise a post foot and mouth depressed rural community. With an enthusiastic back-up group, some innovative ideas, supportive friends and neighbours - and a major funding award from UnLtd - the project got underway.

The project has been so successful that it is being upgraded to create a self-supporting venture that will continue to address the pony problem via the involvement of the wider community.

Background to people4ponies
A herd of ponies was bought to graze the fields of a local farmer, after he had lost all his cows in a Foot and Mouth cull. Wild, cross-bred ponies have no commercial value so the future for groups such as this looked bleak. The farmer and some friends thought that maybe the ponies could be given a better chance in life by being caught, tamed and trained.

Already, homes have been found for over thirty ponies and there are several more currently being educated at Horseford.

Visit Horseford Farm

Horseford Farm is open all year round as a visitor centre. Admission is free of charge but please telephone beforehand.
See the ponies and find out how each one is progressing; talk about handling methods, the project, problem ponies - have a cup of tea and a chat! You will have an interesting and informative visit that is of value to young and old, horsey people or those who don't know one end of a horse from the other, townsfolk and countryfolk alike.

Horseford is a lovely old house with cottage garden, chickens and ducks as well as the ponies. Come and enjoy it all! Cream teas are available but please give 24 hours notice. Home-made scones, jam, clotted cream, cake and as much tea or coffee as you like - £2.80.

Re-Homing the Ponies

Some of the ponies are soon ready to be re-homed but for many, especially those that are traumatised, it may take weeks of careful rehabilitation.

If you think you could offer a pony a home, either on loan or permanently, please telephone for an agreement form. Excellent homes are the first consideration, but a donation towards the continuing project would be much appreciated. Homes and references will be thoroughly checked.

Events, Courses & Workshops at people4ponies

Structured courses are being planned which will include hands-on work with the ponies. Please telephone people4ponies for more details.

As part of its commitment to the community as well as the ponies, people4ponies holds events during the year - there's always something going on! Please telephone people4ponies for details of forthcoming events.

Accommodation at Horseford Farm

Horseford is a traditional and friendly Bed & Breakfast farmhouse. The 'pony experience' is available free of charge to guests, who may stay home or go out as they wish - watch, chat, listen, ask questions, share experiences, take photos or video footage. Bed & Breakfast from £22 per person per night. Evening meals are available by prior arrangement, as are snacks and packed lunches. Tea and coffee are always on the go - at no extra charge.

Horseford is three miles from Witheridge, a quiet and pretty village with Post Office and general stores, newsagents, public houses, Doctor's surgery and veterinary practice. South Molton, a busy but traditional Devon market town, is nine miles away.

The Little Dart River flows along the valley west of Witheridge and through Drayford to the Worlingtons. East and West Worlington are very pretty Devon hamlets with lovely churches that are well worth a visit.

There are miles and miles of quiet country lanes to explore - the flora and fauna are second to none - and Horseford Farm is conveniently situated for all the tourist attractions of North Devon.
