Montana Horses at The Mantle Ranch
The qualities that make a good ranch horse here at Montana Horses (mostly quarter horses and quarter horse cross-breds) include them having stamina, being strong, smart, athletic, agile, and fast. They have to be tough. They have be a step above the herd and willingly give everything when called upon. They become "staff" and they know and love it. 2007 marks the beginning of a new generation of ranch horses that we are raising to work here and elsewhere. They will be brought up with our saddle horses, winter on Montana range, run in the rocks and hills and become naturally strong. As two year olds they will be started, then turned out until they are three. They will be worked here as three and four year olds, when some will be offered for sale during our Annual Spring Horse Roundup & Drive. |

Bitterroot Ranch - Arabian Horses
The Fox family raise friendly, sensible, purebred Arabians which have proved excellent for trail riding and herding cattle, as well as jumping cross country. The young horses are trained using the non confrontational techniques of Linda Tellington-Jones, who has been coming to the ranch for many years to start them. The Bitterroot Arabian mares are a little bit of everything; part Egyptian, mostly Polish, mostly Crabbet, straight Spanish. The emphasis is on temperament, good gaits, and a willingness to do whatever is asked of them. The foals and young stock are outside all the time, running in large pastures, which puts a good foundation on them. The Fox family own a total of around 90 Arabian horses, and raise about 9 foals.

The Exmoor Pony is a rare, unique, survivor. For many centuries it existed on the moor with little human interference, except for the annual 'harvest' of young animals. In the last 200 years, changes, such as enclosure of much of the moor, intensification of agriculture, 'improvement' of our native ponies by cross-breeding, and the spread of motor transport, led to a decline. In 1921 the Exmoor Pony Society was set up, largely by local breeders and enthusiasts, to ensure the continuation of the true, pure-bred Exmoor Pony and to overcome its many threats.
