Welcome to the Good Horsemanship Society

The Good Horsemanship Society has been launched by Horse Agility and Positive Horsemanship creator, Vanessa Bee, and her team, to respond to the need for a Society that wants to help and recognise those that are genuinely working 'for the good of the horse' - whether using natural, traditional and classical methods of horsemanship.

A key element of the society is that it has responded to great need for horse owners to have adequate liability insurance to handle, train and ride their horses - without conventional tack -in any situation, including the public highway. Fidelius insurance services is offering outstanding new and affordable insurance which is available with membership of the Good Horsemanship Society.

What does The Good Horsemanship Society aim to achieve?

The Good Horsemanship Society seeks to address the needs of each individual horse and his owner, offering access to education, knowledge and support that is horse-centred.

The Good Horsemanship Society was formed by a group of people who desperately sought a choice and couldn’t find one. Not just a choice for themselves, but a choice for their horses. They realised that the horse has a point of view and that he expresses that view in a hundred different ways - and to ignore that is to compromise his mental and physical wellbeing. What they wanted to do was to understand the true nature of each individual horse and his needs. One rule does not fit all. There can be no manual that remains the same - it needs rewriting every time we interact with a horse, because we are always learning.

Are you searching for something that other societies don’t offer?
The Good Horsemanship Society is a society that understands that we live in a world where horses sometimes have to be kept at livery, where owners work long hours, where money and time are tight and facilities limited - where competitions, education and insurance options do not reflect what you want to do with your horse. The Good Horsemanship Society wants to present a world in which there is a choice to go another way.

There is another way...

Our Dream
There needs to come a time...
When the horse is a willing partner, not a slave.
When the horse works through understanding not fear.
W hen the horse is respected for what he is not what he should be.

There needs to come a time...
W hen you can look at everything without fear of ridicule.
When it is right because it works not because it is written in a manual.
When you are rewarded for trying to make a difference, not for looking the other way.

By joining the Good Horsemanship Society you give your horse a voice.

A message from Vanessa Bee of The Good Horsemanship Society

Any organization or individual connected with The Good Horsemanship Society is striving to present and teach good horsemanship. No one professes to know everything but at least our members are doing something. .The Good Horsemanship Society cannot vet everyone - there are just too many horsemen, and anyway, who are we to judge? We are all students of ‘Horse’. Instead, I urge you to decide for yourself by looking, really looking, at the horse. Spend time observing and assess the whole package. Ugly moments happen with any rider/handler - it’s only a matter of degrees, but the moments are seconds long – the time it takes for the human or horse to be aware of the ugliness and do something to change it. In observing, we try not to be critical or judgmental, but interested and constructive (just as we would with a horse). I believe that only the perfect can be justified in judging others. We are travellers, constantly referring to the map and being prepared to change the route if we do not like the view.

By joining the Good Horsemanship Society, you will join the ever growing voice of horse owners who haven’t been listened to in the past – the Society supports the individual, as long as it is for the good of the horse.

The Good Horsemanship Society Team

Vanessa Bee - Creator
'I am addicted to horses, there is no other way of life for me.'
Vanessa Bee has been starting and developing businesses for 25 years so when the opportunity arose to start The Good Horsemanship Society there was no hesitation in developing the idea. Trained as a mathematician and teacher Vanessa has ridden and driven horses for over forty years. In 2002 she developed the Positive Horsemanship Certificate courses followed by the phenomenally successful Horse Agility Club in 2010.
'Every day with my horses and businesses is a joy – we only pass through life once – I’m going to live it.'

Philip Osborne – One Man Support Team
‘I absolutely believe in what The Good Horsemanship Society is doing, I wouldn’t work for it if I didn’t.’
Philip spent his childhood on the edge of Dartmoor riding unridable ponies that his mother brought home from the local market on a regular basis. After moving to the North Devon coast he started working for the National Trust staying with them for twenty years rising to Head Warden of The Morte Estate. He ‘retired’ in 2003 to help Vanessa develop her many business ideas. He runs the farm, designs and constructs horse training pens and agility obstacles and keeps our world running when everything seems hopelessly out of control.
‘If you want to be successful with horses (and in life) learn to reverse your trailer.’

Emma Tarrant – Webmaster and Inspiration
Emma has been around horses most of her life attending Pony Club, riding racehorses throughout her teens and early twenties, show jumping and managing competition yards. Emma met Vanessa Bee in 2005 when she moved to Devon and subsequently qualified as a Positive Horsemanship Trainer. Emma has spent time abroad and in the UK observing and working with wild horses and believes that studying the behaviour and interactions of horses in their natural environment allows us a much clearer insight into the true nature of the horse and therefore our domestic equines. Emma is passionate about being part of something which is going to make the future a better place for horses.

Steve Barrett – Insurance Genius
Steve began working in insurance nearly twenty years ago when in 1998 he discovered horses through his wife who was interested in natural horsemanship. After being runaway with and subsequently sliding rather inelegantly to the ground he became interested in why the horse had behaved in such a way and so began to study safer methods of riding and training horses.
‘ I learnt that you didn’t need bigger and bigger bits in the horse’s mouth and when I was riding with a head collar and rope I felt very confident.’
Steve soon found out however that there was no insurance for this way of riding and he began to research and build a strong relationship with a Lloyds Syndicate which has resulted in The Good Horsemanship Society being able to offer a completely new insurance product which covers any rider or handler whatever equipment they use.

Lisa Pinno - Equine Language Specialist
Lisa Pinno has been around horses from a young age, and met a huge variety of characters in all sorts of situations. She has completed a Bsc(Hons) in Animal Behaviour Science and is about to start her Phd in Equine Behaviour. Her main area of interest is in human-animal relationships. Alongside this she has had practical field experience, tracking wolves in Poland and completing a UFAW scholarship study into “Feral ponies' perception of, and response to, human interaction and handling”. She also runs a consultancy business called Pet-Match, which specialises in matching owners to the type, or breed, of animal that would most suit them.
