HoltBall Exmoors - NEWS

HoltBall (Herd 11) is our Exmoor pony herd prefix and is named after our farm in the Porlock Vale in Exmoor National Park. The stallion standing is multi-champion Hawkwell Versuvius who has his first foals on the ground this year. See the Foal Section below for news on Bear's first foals.

Hawkwell Versuvius - Stud Information for 2010

Stallion and mares run together in beautiful, peaceful pasture and are checked regularly. Bear is good with mares arriving with foals at foot. The UK's first ever
Horse Agility competition
at Mendip Stud

Overall Winner
Hawkwell Versuvius

This is a partnership-building equestrian sport where horse and handler face obstacles and task. Perfect for Exmoor ponies, with their intelligence, problem-solving character, courage and immense trainability.

Bear had only been training for one week before this competition, and is has already enhanced our ridden relationship as we become more of a team. No sticks, pulling or shouting are allowed, so this is a sport that rewards good horsemanship.

Aug 2009: Hawkwell Versuvius training with Rodrigo da Costa Matos from the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art

Bear had two sessions with Rodrigo da Costa Matos from the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art. He is a world class rider and trains Lusitano stallions in all the high school movements with incredible sensitivity and horsemanship. The objective was improve our groundwork and prepare Bear for riding again, after summer with visiting mares. Bear was relaxed and well behaved and it was a fantastic learning opportunity.

Exmoor Pony Society Breed Show 2009
Bear was placed 2nd and best moor bred in the stallion class. Bear was on great form but the weather was disgusting - hence the dull pictures!
Porlock Horse Show 2009 - Champion Exmoor & Res M&M Champion
We had a special day taking Bear to our very local show, Porlock Horse Show, which our family have been involved in for generations. It was lovely to talk to local people who were delighted to see an Exmoor pony stallion and asked lots of questions about the ponies. Many people don't get to see the ponies at County shows, so it's good to take Bear out for a bit of PR sometimes, as he is only shown lightly each year. The organisers of Porlock Horse Show are keen to support and promote Exmoor ponies and to encourage good examples of the breed to the show. We'd like to see increased entries next year as Porlock is a lovely showcase for the breed. Bear stood Champion Exmoor and Reserve Mountain & Moorland Champion, so there is still work to be done for an Exmoor to stand best M&M in show! We're looking forward to next year.

Bear as a foal in 2004

Learning to lead as a yearling

Learning to stand
By the way, these leading and standing pictures were taken on 16 November 2005 when we had a surprise 6 inches of snow!
The Exmoor Pony Christmas Show - December 2005 - first time out

Hawkwell Versuvius was shown for the first time at the Christmas Exmoor Pony Show in December 2005, as a yearling (about 20 months old).

Bear had only worn his first headcollar and been socialised to leading and handling a few weeks previously. He won Breeder's Progeny with Hawkwell Helicanus and Best Yearling Colt. Due to our mistake of turning him straight out into a five acre field, on arrival as a foal - it took us a whole year to put a headcollar on Bear...!
