There was an excellent turnout of quality stallions at The Exmoor Pony Society Stallion Parade, held at Ralegh’s Cross, Exmoor, on Wednesday 6 May. Eight senior stallions paraded, followed by four colts. EPS members travelled from as far as Scotland and were rewarded with excellent behaviour from the stallions, many of them working and brought directly from their mares and foals to stand together in the small arena. There was no judging and the stallions were individually presented with commentary. In order of presentation, Mrs Anne Whittle exhibited 16 year old Tawbitts Young Mickey by H29/7 Waltersgay Sundew out of Hawkwell Lady Margaret 12/82 and owned and bred by Mesdames JM Ablett and GL Langdon - his behaviour was remarkable considering it was one of very few outings for this free living stallion. Next was 13 year old Heron, 213/7, a championship winner, by A/95 Ice Cream out of 78/78 Dunkery Reeve, bred by Mrs P Ney and owned by Mr & Mrs D Wallace. Mrs Stephany Poulter brought the successful in hand and ridden 11 year old Flying Buttress 171/12 by H56/1 Winged Bowman out of 49/32 Quickthorn who she also bred.

Mrs Pam Cox, of Cheritonridge Exmoors, exhibited 8 year old Waltersgay Nightingale H29/36, by 49/38 Siskin out of H29/6 Waltersgay Moss Rose and bred by Misses M Williams and I Nash. The multi champion Nightingale represented the breed at Olympia ridden by Charlotte Razay. Next paraded was Julian Westcott’s 5 year old multi champion Dunkery Nuthatch 78/144 5y.o. by A167 Liqueur our of 78/70 Dunkery Pipit and bred by Mrs Wendy Vint. Julian also exhibited the family’s 2 year old colt, Cider Apple 1/2-B by Dunkery Nuthatch out of Mabel 10/96, who passed his stallion inspection on the day. Mrs Dawn Westcott, of HoltBall Exmoors, exhibited her multi champion and breed show supreme champion 5 year old, Hawkwell Versuvius, by 12/188 Hawkwell Great Gatsby out of 178/3 Collabear Countess (Cock Robin), and bred by Mr John Western. Mrs Wendy Vint’s four year old Dunkery Godwit 4 y.o. by 21/48 Beinn Ghoblach out of 78/94 Dunkery Flamingo was paraded by Mr Michael Dewhurst, who also gave an informative talk on genetics at the AGM. Next was four year old Northcroft Cracker 321/5 by 187/18 Threeshires Aristocrat out of Avarel Angharad 278/3 who was bred by the late Mrs Eunice Prosser and is owned by Miss S Prosser. Owner/breeder Mrs Sue Glasper presented three year old Sweetcombe Sunmaker 215/39 by Sweetcombe Sundew out of A82-A Heineken. Sunmaker also passed his stallion inspection on the day of the parade. Mr David Brewer and Mrs Debbie Davey, both EPS panel judges and inspectors, carried out the stallion inspections. Two other colts who passed their stallion inspection were two year old Hardicott Shiraz 434/2 by 99/22 Moorland Kingfisher out of Vintage A/325, bred and owned by Mrs A M Tuckett, and two year old Blackthorn Poteen H14/56 by A222-A Orange Juice out of Thamseside Whisper 181/10, bred by Mrs J Webb and owned by Miss K French.

As well as the above colts, the other youngstock exhibited included 2 year old Hawkwell Meadowhawk 12/238 by Hammingden Dragonfly out of Hawkwell I’m Smartie Too who was bred by Mr John Western and is owned by Mrs M Buttner. Mesdames JM Ablett and GL Langon presented two colts – two year old Tawbitts Vicery H17/94 by H17/12 Tawbitts Young Mickey out of H17/28 Tawbitts Kernick who traces back to Cock Robin, and yearling Tawbitts Mystic Merlin H17/98 by 4/29 Ebony out of Golden Mystery 23/177 who is possibly the last foal from Golden Mystery, the great mare, bred by the late Fred Milton.
It was a good opportunity to see the stallions after the disappointment of the cancelled EPS Breed Show and Christmas Foal Show last year, which meant many Exmoors missed key outings, especially youngstock.
