CANINE TOURISM EDITORIAL - Boarding Kennels
Boarding a Dog in Kennels

When taking a vacation overseas or a long way from home, dogs will usually have to stay behind. If you are lucky, a friend may look after your dogs, or a pet sitter can be hired to care for them in their own home. The other option is to place the dogs in a boarding kennel.

When selecting a kennel for your pet, make sure it has been inspected and licensed by the Local Authority - seek recommendations from 'doggie' friends if you can. For peace of mind, visit the kennel before booking to make sure you are happy it is suitable for your dog. Considerations to take into account, include exercise facilities; secure cages and concrete runs (these are easier to disinfect); and double doors to the main building (this will reduce the chances of dogs escaping).

Once you are satisfied with the kennels, book well in advance (this is vital during the main school holiday periods of Easter and Summer) and ensure that your dogs are fully vaccinated against the major diseases - the kennels will probably need to see certificates. Be aware that some vaccinations can take several weeks to be effective. The owners will also need to know of any special dietary or medical requirements for your dogs.

In certain circumstances, dogs can feel insecure about being left alone, and it may help to prepare them by booking your animals into the kennels for the odd weekend, before leaving them for a longer period. This will allow the dogs to get used to the new environment and help you decide if the kennels are suitable. To settle any dog when they are being parted from their owner, give them familiar bedding to lie on and a selection of favourite toys to play with.
