THE BRITISH HORSE SOCIETY SOUTH WEST - PRESS RELEASE OCT 2004

PRESS RELEASE

Date: 15 November 2004

The British Horse Society welcomes

new Government initiative

The British Horse Society has welcomed the recent announcement by Defra minister, Alun Michael, that land grazed by horses can now benefit from the Common Agricultural Policy Single Payment scheme, in recognition of the important contribution horses make to the rural economy.

Riding schools, studs, livery yards and private horse owners may benefit from this new scheme, which is to come into force in 2005. To comply with the new scheme, land needs to be 0.3 hectares or greater in size, kept in ‘Good Agricultural and Environmental Condition’, not used for a non agricultural purpose, and registered on the Rural Land Register.

The British Horse Society Chief Executive, Graham Cory, said “This announcement is a positive step forward in the Government recognising just how important the equine industry is in the UK. Clarification is still needed on a number of points, but initially this scheme may provide a welcome boost for the industry.”
